Born on February 21, 1954, in Houston, Texas, he was the beloved son of the late James and Frances Hewitt. A lifelong Texan, Jim spent his years deeply rooted in faith, family, and the Gulf Coast community he cherished. He was a member of Holy Family Parish in Galveston, where his steadfast faith guided every chapter of his life.
Jim began his education in Houston at St. Michael’s Catholic School and graduated from Strake Jesuit in 1972. He earned degrees in Economics and History from the University of Texas in 1976 and went on to graduate from South Texas College of Law in 1979. He then forged a respected career as an attorney, known for his integrity, sharp intellect, and compassionate nature. Jim practiced law with a deep sense of justice and a genuine commitment to the well-being of his clients and colleagues.
He is survived by his sister, Kimberly Wakie, and her husband Arthur Wakie; niece Whitney Keene and her husband Andrew Keene; grandniece Caroline Keene; grandnephew Caleb Keene; and nephew Matthew Wakie. He also leaves behind a wide circle of extended family and friends, all of whom were touched by his humor, warmth, and generous spirit.
A passionate sports enthusiast, especially when it came to football, Jim was a devoted lifelong supporter of the Texas Longhorns. He enjoyed golfing and hunting in his younger years and remained an avid fisherman throughout his life— pastimes that reflected his love of the outdoors and the coastal lifestyle.
Jim was a dedicated student of history and an enthusiastic traveler. He particularly enjoyed annual trips to Las Vegas during March Madness and visits to New Orleans, where he embraced the city's vibrant nightlife and unique cuisine. A lover of music, he had a special fondness for Outlaw Country and Classic Rock. He never passed up a good crawfish boil, where he found joy in good food and even better company.
James Vincent Hewitt will be remembered for his vibrant personality, enduring faith, and the light he brought into every room. His legacy of kindness, loyalty, and love will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed.
A visitation for James will be held on Monday, July 14, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home – Grand Chapel , 6900 Lawndale Street., Houston, TX 77023.
A funeral service will follow from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Grand Chapel. Immediately after, a committal service will take place from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in memory of James.
