James Kevin Mitchell, known to everyone simply as Kevin, passed away on March 11, 2026, in Houston, Texas. He was 58 years old. Born on November 5, 1967, in Litchfield, Kentucky, Kevin built a life defined by loyalty, generosity, and an unmistakable warmth that drew people to him wherever he went.
Kevin dedicated an impressive 37 years of his career to CenterPoint Energy, where he was known for his deep knowledge and tireless work ethic. But anyone who worked alongside him would tell you that what made Kevin truly special was not just what he knew or how hard he worked. It was the friendships he built along the way. His colleagues were not just coworkers; they became family, and he treated them as such.
If Kevin loved you, chances are he fed you. His love language was food, plain and simple. He enjoyed cooking throughout the week, but weekends were his time to shine. He would fire up the BBQ pit and put out a big spread for anyone lucky enough to be nearby. Whether it was at his home in Houston or his beloved country house in Centerville, Texas, there was always a plate waiting and a seat at the table. When he was not behind the grill, you could find him shooting pool, playing cards, cheering on the Houston Texans, or watching just about any college football game that happened to be on. He was a true fan of the sport in every sense.
Kevin is survived by his wife, Margaret Mensi; his daughter, Brittany Mitchell; his parents, Charles and Linda Mitchell; his brother, Phillip Mitchell; his sister, Stacey Mitchell-Weatherford; and his nephew, Mitchell Weatherford. Each of them carries with them countless memories of a man who showed up for the people he loved, consistently and without reservation.
Visitation will be held on March 19, 2026, from 5:00 to 9:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale, 6900 Lawndale St., Houston, Texas 77023. A funeral service will follow on March 20, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the same location.
Kevin left behind more than memories. He left behind full stomachs, winning hands of cards, and a whole lot of people who are better for having known him.
