James Bernard "Bernie" Probst passed away surrounded by the love of his family.
Bernie was deeply devoted to his family and friends. His warmth, humor, and steady presence left a lasting imprint on all who knew him. He was always there - always kind, always patient, always giving. He cherished his wife, daughter and grandchildren, filling their lives with laughter, love, and unwavering support. The memories he created with them will be treasured forever.
In his high school days, Bernie was voted class favorite, a reflection of the joy and light he brought to those around him. He was a standout athlete and earned a football scholarship to Sul Ross State University in Alpine, where he formed lifelong friendships. Those who knew him then would say the same as those who knew him later - he had a way of making people feel seen, welcomed, and valued. He carried that warmth with him throughout his life. He was hard-working, courageous, and lived with quiet integrity and heart. He found his greatest happiness in the simple moments - time spent with family and friends, shared laughter, and being surrounded by those he loved.
Bernie proudly served his country in the United States Army, reflecting a lifelong commitment to service, dedication, and humility. He was a steadfast fan of Texas A&M athletics - especially football - and treasured the time spent attending games with family and friends.
Bernie built a meaningful career as a funeral director, where his compassion and gentle spirit touched countless lives. After retiring, he continued his calling of caring for others as a medical assistant for nine years. Patients and families often spoke about how kind and genuinely caring he was. He had a special gift - not just for doing his job - but for connecting with people during their most vulnerable moments. He would go out of his way to sit with those who had lost loved ones, offering comfort, listening without judgment, and simply being present. Even today, many still speak of the support and compassion he gave them during some of the most difficult times in their lives.
Bernie was truly one of a kind - a rare gem whose value is felt even more deeply in his absence. His legacy of kindness, compassion, and love will continue to live on in every life he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Left to honor his memory are his devoted wife, Victoria (Vickie); his treasured daughter, Brittney, and son-in-law, Zach; his cherished grandchildren, Scarlett and James; his beloved sister, Doris Nell; and countless loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grand nephews, cousins, brothers-and-sisters-in-law, and friends.
