Jean Abernathy born January 4, 1943, in Houston, Texas, went to her precious Lord Jesus on October 23, 2024 in Montgomery, Texas. Jean was a faithful member of The Woodlands Methodist Church, where she ministered to many souls at Montgomery County Emergency Assistance and her beloved Alzheimer-care “Gathering Place”, which she helped start at TWMC. She served in many organizations, including the The Walk to Emmaus, Girl Scouts, Northwest Assistance Ministries, the Jane Long Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, where she was Regent for three years, Historic Glendale Cemetery Assoc. and the Johnson-Hayes Cemetery Preservation Society.
At an Elvis Presley concert in 1956, she met the love of her life, Charles Abernathy, whom she married in 1964. They joyfully celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on September 5!
Jean loved Jesus and delighted in serving Him, particularly when service involved helping others who were temporarily in difficult circumstances. She taught Sunday School and was a gifted encourager, joyfully welcoming new members into our church and helping them find places to fit in.
At an early age Jean excelled in ballet dancing, her Mom lovingly making all her dance costumes, while teaching Jean to sew. Jean pursued this beautiful art all her life, teaching in numerous studios, instructing neighborhood children in our “play room” and entertaining at the Gathering Place!
She is preceded in death by her loving parents Eugene and Marie Kuhlman; is survived by her adoring husband, Charles; sister Nancy Pickett; brothers Glen Kuhlman and wife Sandy; Chris Kuhlman and wife Jessica.
Left to cherish her memory are daughters Cindy Slavick and husband Ken; Shannon Bass and husband Ben; grandchildren Adam Hesterley and wife Evie; Ryan Slavick and wife Andrea; Jessica Slavick; Cole Bass, Zach Bass and Mackenzie Bass; great-grandchildren Danniel and Kaylie and Rosie Hesterley.
