Jean Berckart, most recently of Round Rock Texas, passed away on Sunday, January 21, just shy of her 98th birthday. She was born on January 31, 1926, in Paterson, NJ, and lived most of her life in Wayne, NJ. Although she moved to Texas in 1998 to be closer to her precious grandson, she was always a “Jersey girl,” and proud of it.
Jean defied her age for 96 years, and her vitality, health and beauty were always an inspiration to others. She loved to entertain and to be at the center of every party. She was a fierce game player, particularly mah jongg and just about any card game. Her memory was exceptional, and she never forgot a birthday or a telephone number of a friend or family member. The thing that was most important to her was family.
She loved to keep a beautiful home and decorate it for all the holidays, especially Christmas. She was known for her elaborate displays and much treasured Christmas decorations, and her bakery-worthy Christmas cookies. She could tell you a story about every single decoration, including who gave it to her and when. Never one to pass up a Christmas store, there was always room for one more item. Or two.
Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ralph, who passed away in 2000 and was dearly missed. She was also preceded in death by her parents and siblings. She is survived by her son Michael, daughter Connee and son-in-law Kent Sullivan, and grandson John Sullivan.
Besides a close group of family and lifelong friends in New Jersey, Jean made many friends after moving to Texas. First in Pearland and Houston, then Sun City Texas in Georgetown and finally in Round Rock. She and her husband were founding members of Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church in Wayne, NJ.
The family would like to thank Halcyon Home Care, particularly Maria Hansen, for her companionship this past year, and Hospice Austin for the care and compassion they provided in her final days.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 29, 2024, and a Mass at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice Austin.
