December 11, 1939 – September 15, 2018
On Saturday, September 15, 2018, John Charles Cook went home to our Lord peacefully at the age of 78 from a weak heart, worn out from his many acts of love, kindness, and generosity. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia Cook; his daughters, Katherine Lyngholm and husband Bill Lyngholm and Debbie Cook; his grandchildren, Steven Jones and wife SheBa, Megan Lyngholm, and Christopher Joshua Harlow; and his great-grandchildren, Matthew Bellamy, Elizabeth Jones, and Penelope Jones; his brother, Terry Cook and wife Cindy; and many other family and friends.
John was born in Houston, Texas on December 11, 1939 to George Monroe Cook and Edna Peck Cook. He graduated from San Jacinto High School in the class of 1958. He attended Texas State University in San Marcos and Lee College in Baytown. John served his community as a police officer including the Harris County Sheriff’s Department, Seabrook Police Department, Hedwig Village Police Department, and finished his career in 2008 as Chief of Police for Spring Valley Village.
John was a member of the S. P. Waltrip Masonic Lodge No. 1328 A.F. & A.M. He served in numerous offices including Worshipful Master in 1996-1997 and Secretary from 1997-2013. He was endowed on July 18, 1997. He also served the Grand Lodge of Texas as District Deputy Grand Master in 2004-2005. John received the Golden Trowel Award (one of the highest honors any Texas freemason can receive) on June 23, 2013 in recognition of his consistently demonstrated outstanding and exemplary service to and in the community, and showing dedication to the moral and philanthropic teachings of Masonry without any thought given to personal recognition.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Waltrip Funeral Directors. Visitation with the family will be at 1:00 pm, and an informal gathering to share memories will be held at the S. P. Waltrip Masonic Lodge No. 1328 A.F. & A.M. immediately following the service.
The family would like to thank the team members from Blue Star Hospice for their loving support and care and the caregivers from Angels' Hands Sitter Agency. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to either the American Heart Association or the Desk and Derrick Educational Trust.
Weep Not For Me
Weep not for me though I am gone
Into the gentle night.
Grieve if you will, but not for long
Upon my soul’s sweet flight.
There is no need for tears.
I am at peace, my soul is at rest.
There is no pain, I suffer not,
For with your love I was so blessed.
I am in a place of comfort,
The fear now is gone.
Put those things out of your thoughts,
In your memory I live on.
Remember not my fight for breath.
Remember not the strife.
Please do not dwell upon my death
But celebrate my life.
