John was born on December 10, 1955, in Jersey City, New Jersey, to Randolph and Mildred Geigel, but moved to Texas as soon as he could. He studied civil engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and graduated in 1978 at the top of his class.
John spent his entire career at Exxon as a civil engineer, joining the company directly after college and retiring in 2016 after thirty-eight years; he then immediately rejoined Exxon as a consultant, and continued in that role until his death.
John met Nancy (née Carden) in 1980; they were wed on January 22, 1982, and had three children.
In 1990, while attending Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and hearing the preaching of the Rev. John Kieschnick, John became a Christian and found great hope in the promised resurrection. His favorite Bible passage from then until his death was Revelation 21:1–4:
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.’ ”
John was devoted to his family throughout his life, caring for his older sister and playing with his many grandchildren. Most of all, he loved adventures with his wife, which included traveling overseas and exploring local wineries. In 2013, he joined Memorial Lutheran Church, where he frequently studied with the Rev. Scott Murray in Bible classes and, in 2021, founded a chapter of Lutherans for Life. John enjoyed smoking cigars with friends and practicing his aim at the shooting range.
John was predeceased by his parents, Randolph and Mildred. He is survived by his wife of forty years, Nancy; their three children, Jessica Rosenwinkel (Thomas), Jocelyn Perkins (Joshua), and Scott Geigel (Crystal); twelve grandchildren, Ezra, Abigail, Jude, Joshua, Colin, Erin, Bethany, John, Jane, Chloe, Mary, and Deborah; his sister, Joan; and his brother, Gary.
Services will be held at Memorial Lutheran Church (5800 Westheimer Road) on October 25 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Rev. Robert Paul will officiate.
