June 1, 1932, to Allen and Virginia Joiner and remained a lifelong Houstonian. He was a graduate of Lamar High School and the Rice Institute, class of 1955, earning a degree in Architecture. He lettered in Track as a student and remained a loyal alum of Rice Owl athletics throughout his life, but was a particularly avid baseball fan, only recently relinquishing his season tickets.
While pursuing graduate studies at the University of Houston, he met Virginia White of Helena, AR, and they were married in 1959. For over 30 years he participated in the development and building of numerous schools in the Houston area and other projects for the state of Texas. Called the Godfather of Lincrest Lane, John was also the long-serving Democrat party precinct chair and a generous neighbor in the Larchmont area he called home for almost fifty years. In addition, he was honored to be recognized for fifty years of service as a Mason, Holland Lodge No. 1 AF & AM. He and Virginia were members of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry and as Senior Warden. They were also members of the Houston Club, and enthusiastic supporters of the Houston Museum of Natural Science.
John’s beloved wife, Virginia, predeceased him in 2022. He is survived by his brother, Thomas L Joiner,
and family of Katy, TX.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, February 1, 2024, at 2 o’clock, in Christ Chapel at St. Martin’s
Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road, Houston, TX, 77056. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to
St. Martin’s Episcopal Church.
