José Luis was born in Linares Nuevo Leon, Mexico on December 27, 1947 to parents Hilario and Lidia García, he was the 11th of twelve children. After losing his mother at the age of 3, José Luis grew up on a small farm tending to chickens and goats with his brothers, sisters and father. He later moved to the big city of Monterrey followed by another move to Nuevo Laredo. It is here that he met the love of his life Marta Hernandez. They wed on February 3, 1973 and thus began their beautiful love story that led them to many wonderful adventures and a fabulous life together.
In 1976 with a growing family and an eager desire for a better life and success, José and Marta moved to Houston. As an excellent welder he worked for numerous oil-field related companies within the Houston area until his retirement in 2013. José Luis constantly encouraged his children to strive for the best and pursue higher educations to avoid the hardships he encountered in his youth and within his career.
José Luis, with his charismatic personality, loved to celebrate life with family and friends. We will miss his jokes, his huge smile, contagious laughter and the excitement he had to dance with his wife Marta, the love of his life. Never shy and with great excitement he truly was the "life of the party!"
It brought José Luis great joy to travel and experience new adventures with his family, from visiting the small farm he was from in “La Pamona” to enjoying the beauty of sandy beaches. His desire to experience the world led him from coast to coast and even on a memorable trip to Europe as he lived his life to the fullest.
José Luis was strong mentally and physically with a golden heart molded out of the experiences from his youth. He relied on extended family during his times living in Mexico while moving from city to city. He had a love for family and once he set roots in Houston, motivated to give back and inspired by those who helped him in the past, José Luis and his wife Marta often opened the door of their home to anyone who needed help or a place to stay. On many occasions he accommodated his nephews and nieces as he encouraged them to work hard and reach for greater heights than he had. Whether they liked it or not he was always there to advise them and push them to be successful and independent just as he did with his own children. This in turn established strong and beautiful relationships that he dearly treasured till his death.
As a youth he enjoyed playing soccer and after his playing days were over he would always follow his favorite team, Las Chivas and the Mexico National team. In his later years José Luis picked up a new and unexpected hobby, golf. This initially began as a curiosity into the sport as his sons were also learning the game. His unwavering desire to learn drove him to teach himself how to play the game. This evolved into many new friendships, tournaments, travels with the love of his life and a few trophies.
In late 2013 José Luis joined his son, José Jr.., in his entrepreneurial journey in building a custom furniture company. His willingness to help, share his wisdom, teach his time-honored techniques and mentor during his final years further cemented his legacy of being a great man, a great father, a wise mentor and a loving husband to his wife.
