

He attended Dunbar High School, joined the Navy out of high school and from there he worked for Hughes Tools where he spent a number of years until leaving to work for Metro which is where he retired in 2012. Upon retirement, his love for horses led him to create J. Houston Horse Carriages with his son, Joel Houston.
As a hobby, he trained Tennessee walking horses most of his adult life and showed some of his favorite Walkers. You would see him driving his decorated carriages in downtown Houston showing Houstonians as well as visitors around the city streets. He also loved spending time with his grandkids!
He and his wife, Gayola Porter Houston, were married for 20 years until his passing on Friday, September 11, 2025, at the age of 74. During this union Joseph inherited a mother-in-law whom he would always refer to as, "A Shining Star."
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Arthur & Josephine Houston, brothers Arthur Houston, George Houston and sister Joyce Houston.
He leaves to cherish his memory, wife, Gayola Houston, son Joel D. Houston (DeSean), grandsons, Joel and Deston, granddaughter Jahzara, all of Coldspring TX, daughter Ashley Houston of Houston TX and sister Mary Jean Grissom of Lufkin TX.
