

Joycelyn Rose Owen passed away in her home January 20. Joy led an active life in which she played many roles. Joy made her debut August 5, 1927 in Dallas, Texas. She grew up in Houston and graduated from Austin High School. In her early years Joy was a singer, performing with several Houston bands. She was a member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine; a tap dancer, instructor and founder of Tip Top Tappers. Joy loved traveling with her husband Marler and socializing with her many friends especially Blondie. Mother and Grandmother were her greatest roles. Joy was preceded in death by her father Paul Meyer, step-father Lloyd Brightman, mother Sarah Brightman, husband Marler Owen and beloved dog Angel. She is survived by her son Tom Johnson and wife Nancy; daughter Jan Scott and husband Craig; grandchildren Jennifer Scott, Jaime McDowell, husband Sky; Ryan and Reid Johnson. The family would like to extend special thanks to Joy’s Angels: Sue, Christine, Desiree, Monica, Lupe, Susan and Melissa. A celebration of life will be held Tuesday January 24 10AM at Forest Park Lawndale. Visitation will begin at 9AM. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Shriners Childrens Hospital or Christus Hospice, 2707 West Loop South, Houston, TX 77008.
