Katherine "Kathy" Rincon Melchor, 89, passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2026. The daughter of José Rincon and Sarah Gonzales, Kathy was a lifelong Houstonian who made her home in Second Ward, Denver Harbor, and Songwood neighborhoods. She and her husband, Raymond Melchor, shared 53 years before his passing in 2013.
Though barely five feet tall, Kathy had a personality that filled a room. Outgoing, affectionate, and rarely one to sit still, she loved being surrounded by people. She made friends wherever she went, greeting people with a smile, striking up a conversation, and welcoming them without judgment. She was always ready to offer something to eat, and her rice, enchiladas, and fideo were legendary. Kathy's family will miss her energy, her laughter, and the conversations around her table. Every celebration will be smaller without her.
For many years, Kathy worked in the office at Eliot Elementary School, where her warm personality was a natural fit. She was also a faithful member of Resurrection Catholic Church.
Kathy also enjoyed dancing, shopping, gardening, and doting on her beloved little dogs. As the mother of four boys, she embraced their love of sports and was a devoted Houston Astros fan.
In later years, Kathy lived with Alzheimer's disease. Her family extends its gratitude to the staff at Landon Ridge Memory Care and Highland Hospice for their kindness during her final months.
Kathy was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Melchor; her sons, Albert Roland Melchor and Richard Melchor; her parents, José and Sarah Gonzales Rincon; stepfather Narciso Valdez; and her siblings Carmen Lozano, John, Felix, Joe and Soledad Rincon, Elvira Martinez, Gloria Casillas, and Juan Valdez.
She is survived by her sons, Ray (Kim) Melchor and Rodney (Stephanie) Melchor; daughter-in-law Alycia Melchor; stepdaughter, Esther (Edmundo) Flores; and her siblings, Rosie Corona, Frances Lefkowitz, and Paul Rincon.
She also leaves behind grandchildren Mark, Mike, Jennifer, Kandice, Roger, Rick, Stephanie, Joshua, Danielle, Kristen, Damian, Lyla, Roland, and Laura; eight great-grandchildren; and many loved ones who called her Tía, Grandma, and friend.
Pallbearers will be Ray, Rodney, Roger, Joshua, and Damian Melchor, and Damián Sotelo. Honorary pallbearer will be Roland Melchor.
