Katherine W. Pierce, 91, passed away on September 22, 2019 in Katy, Texas. Born to Gertrude Floyd and Louie Walker in Franklin, Texas, Katherine Eda Ann Walker legally shortened her name to Katherine Walker as an adult. Preceded in death by husband, Thomas (Jack) Pierce, daughter, Virgie Griffith and siblings Lila Wilson, Vera Hale, and Margie Pillans. Katherine’s only surviving sibling is Martha Walker, who turned 97 on Sept. 22.
Kathy liked to tell the story of her first job. A friend went with her to apply at a bank and both girls were asked what position they would like. The friend requested a position beyond the scope of her expertise while Kathy said “I’ll take anything.” Well, her friend went home without a job and Kathy became a bank teller. She capitalized on this experience by later becoming a supervisor of bookkeepers for 20 years at Fidelity & Deposit Co.
After a marriage that blessed her with 2 beautiful daughters, Virgie Ann & Janice Lee, Kathy was determined, as a single mother, to raise strong, independent women like herself. Kathy was raised in the Baptist faith and attended church at South Avenue Baptist in Pasadena, TX where the girls were raised. She graciously balanced the struggle of motherhood with working until they were grown and married.
After the girls were raised and gone, Kathy begin venturing out to reconnect socially. Although hesitant due to cost and worried about getting lost to and from various events, she joined a social club. This was one time her poor sense of direction got her right where she wanted to be, in the arms of Thomas (Jack) Pierce. Barely through the door, and just signing in to her first mixer, she felt a touch on her elbow. She turned to see Jack, who asked her to sit with him. A better question couldn’t have been asked since neither danced and neither drank alcohol. She said “Yes” and as they sat together, they talked their way into a loving marriage of thirty years and the union of two families. Jack was a successful home builder and Kathy was finally able to quit working so they could better enjoy their life together. Jack made Kathy so happy and the special attention he gave her never stopped. Everyone was very happy for them. They both attended North Oaks Baptist Church where they made many friends. They spent their marriage enjoying many common interests, being with family on special occasions, traveling, gambling in Vegas where she loved the slots and keno. They both enjoyed bowling as a pastime and joined leagues where they won many trophies.
