Katherine Lois Schmelter

Katherine Lois Schmelter, 69, fell asleep in Christ Jesus on Saturday, February 27, 2010, in Houston, Texas. She was born January 2, 1941 to John Rudolph and Ruth Anna (nee Bigon) Schmelter in Houston. Katherine was baptized into Christ at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church on March 9, 1941. After several years at Bethany Lutheran Elementary School she moved to California in 1952. She graduated from Bloomington Elementary School in 1955 and Colton High School in 1959. She attended the University of California, Riverside, and then returned to Houston where she graduated from the University of Houston in 1964 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. After college whe went to work for IBM, enjoying over 25 years with the company. She later worked for BMC Software before retiring in 2007.

Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, sister Ester Ruth Weber, brothers John R. Schmelter, Jr. and Richard L. Schmelter, and nephews John R. Schmelter III and Loren L. Schmelter. She leaves behind stepmother Gladys Schmelter, stepsister Joyce Butts, stepbrother Stanley Correll and wife Joann, sisters-in-law Phyllis Schmelter, Pat Schmelter, and Ginny Schmelter. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews who all knew her as a great great aunt.

Kathy was a faithful member of Memorial Lutheran Church. While an active member of the Lutheran Women in Mission, she is most remembered for her weekly "greeter" duties. Kathy was the first person to meet you at the door of the church. Her smile and love for life will be missed by all.

A service of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at Memorial Lutheran Church, 5800 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas, with interment following at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Houston. A visitation for friends and family will be held from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, 2010 in the Memorial Lutheran Church Commons.
