Lai Jean Yeang, 81 years old, passed away peacefully in her home on May 2, 2020. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Lai was born in Kaiping, China to Joe M.F. and Tuey Gor and immigrated to the United States and settled in Houston, TX in 1947. She graduated from Jefferson Davis High School. Her claim to fame was attending high school with Kenny Rogers and fondly recalled watching him in the school talent shows.
Shortly after high school, she met the love of her life, Gean (David) at social get-togethers such as bowling and picnics. They married in August 1961 and were blessed with 58 years of marriage. Together they enjoyed raising four children, sons Glenn and Sherman and twin daughters, Cindy and Susan. In 1967 they opened David’s Food Center where they worked side by side for 25 years and serviced loyal customers in the north Houston area.
Upon retirement, they had many opportunities to travel abroad and enjoy life. Once her grandchildren were born, her greatest joy was being a grandmother and her top priorities were babysitting and cooking her great Chinese food for them, especially Yin-Yin rice. She was an avid sports fan and loved watching The Houston Oilers, Texans, Rockets and Astros. She proved through and through she was truly a Houstonian. One of her favorite highlights was attending her grandsons’ soccer, basketball and football games and cheering them on from the stands. She also grew fond of word search puzzle books and it was no secret how much she loved Elvis Presley and watching all of his movies and listening to his music.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Joe M.F. and Tuey Gor, sisters Fay Chan and Nancy Gor, brothers Allan Gor and William Gor, brother-in-law Jeff Merrill and son Glenn Yeang.
She is survived by husband, Gean (David) Yeang, son Sherman Yeang (Debra), daughters Cindy Tam (Albert) and Susan Cole (Lawrence), daughter-in-law Nina Yeang, grandchildren Andrew, Brian, Connor and Dylan Yeang, brother Edmond Gor (Jeanie), sister Linda Merrill and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
