Born on December 3, 1929, in San Antonio, Texas, Leonard was the beloved son of Francisco Guerrero and Maria del Refugia (Gurrola) Guerrero. He married the love of his life, Manuela Cortez, and together they shared 73 beautiful years filled with love, devotion, and cherished memories. Leonard was a faithful and active member of Our Lady of Sorrows, deeply involved in his church and community. He worked at Shepler’s for 42 years before retiring, building a career marked by commitment and pride.
Leonard’s commitment to the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) touched the lives of countless Scouters and Scouts through his service as a BSA Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, Unit Commissioner, Merit Badge Counselor, and BSA Adult Trainer for over 50 years. Mr. G truly embodied the values and spirit of Scouting in every aspect of his life, leaving a lasting legacy in the lives of all who were shaped by his guidance and example.
His passion for Scouting was recognized through many honors, including the Silver Beaver Award, Distinguished Commissioner Service Award, Scouter’s Key Award, Wood Badge, Order of the Arrow, and the Bronze Pelican Award, as well as numerous service awards. Through his leadership, mentorship, and guidance, Mr. G helped many Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, including his son and two grandsons. The old BSA Camp Hudson (Memorial Drive) was Mr. G’s introduction to camping, which led him to take Scouts to inner-city, local, state, and national BSA campgrounds. Mr. G also enjoyed taking his family and friends on camping trips to destinations such as Big Bend, Yellowstone, and Glacier National Parks. He loved being part of the great outdoors.
Mr. G’s other passions included Indian dancing (Texas Gulf Coast Tia Piah Society) and Dutch Oven Cooking (Dutch Oven Society). Through these, he embraced the spirit of outdoor gatherings and found joy in Indian songs, gourd dancing, and the sense of community they brought. He traveled throughout the state, nation, and world with his beloved wife and family, relished large family gatherings, and treasured the quiet serenity of fishing. He was a gifted storyteller, a collector of Matchbox cars, coins, stamps, and an expert on everything Toys “R” Us. Above all, Leonard was deeply proud of his family and the beautiful life they created together. He deeply loved his family and enjoyed spending time with all his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife, Manuela; his children, Leonard Jr. & Spouse, Delilah, Dennis & Spouse, and Belinda & Spouse; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; his surviving sister, and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
