Leonard John Toups

Leonard John Toups, 95, of South Houston, Texas, passed on Wednesday, April 12, 2023. Leonard was born to Edias Toups and Nita Quarrels on November 16, 1927, in Freeport, Texas. Leonard married Patsy Jeannie Dumesnil and they had one son Gary Toups. On April 18, 1970, Leonard then married Carolyn Sue Crull in Katy, Texas. They were married 4 days shy of 53 years. Carolyn has two sons, Rock and Bill Lilly from a previous marriage.

Leonard flew for the Navy in World War II and the Korean War. Leonard received a WWII medal. From the Korean War, Leonard received the Silver and Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Prisoner of War Medal. After a distinguished career, Leonard retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander.

Upon leaving the Navy, Leonard continued working in a field that strived to help other people. He worked his way up through the police force of South Houston, Texas, ending up as the deputy police chief.

Leonard is survived by his loving wife Carolyn Toups of South Houston and step sons, Rock Lilly of League City and Bill Lilly (wife Katie) of Houston. Leonard is also survived by his son, Gary Toups (wife Jacquelyn) of Nederland, Tx.

Leonard is survived by the following grandchildren: Heather Carillo (husband, Luis) of Rosenberg, Tx; Matthew Toups (wife Jamie), of Port Neches, Tx; Amy Lee (husband Travis) of Houston, Tx; Danica Smith of Houston, Tx; Chad Bradberry (wife Jennifer) of Orange, Tx; and Kent Lilly of Houston, Tx. Leonard is also survived by 13 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Leonard is preceded in death by his parents, Edias Toups and Nita Quarrels, sister Rona O’Quinn and great grandson Caden Richter.

Pallbearers are Matthew Toups, Chad Bradberry, Hunter Toups, Tray Beeson, and Kent Lilly.

A funeral service for Leonard will be held Tuesday, April 25, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023, followed by a committal service from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
