This is the day the Lord has made. Lola Marie Nelson Farmer, 87, died December 14, 2019 at home. She was born August 11, 1932 in McPherson, Kansas to Albert and Minnie Nelson. Her father supported his family by farming wheat during the Depression. She had an older sister, Marian and an older brother, Marvin, both preceded her in death. When the girls were young they both swore they would never marry a farmer, but Marian married a Kansas wheat farmer, and Lola married Thomas Edward Farmer, a chemist she met when attending Trinity Lutheran Hospital Nursing School in Kansas City. Tom and Lola were married January 23, 1954 at Trinity Lutheran Church in McPherson, Kansas. They moved to McGregor, Texas where their first child, Elizabeth Ann was born in 1956. The family moved to the Panhandle of Texas and then in 1962 moved again to Houston where they bought the family home they owned for 57 years. Their son, William Edward was born in 1963. She was a devoted member of St Andrew Lutheran Church for 57 years.
Lola continued her nursing career at Spring Branch Memorial Hospital and at Memorial City Hospital.
She was a member of Spring Branch African Violet club. She entered her violets in competitions and won many Best in Show and blue ribbons. She also sold many of her plants to florists and nurseries. Her hobby took up many rooms in the family home.
After she retired, Lola spent many summers in Wyoming and exploring the National Parks of the West with her daughter. They made many wonderful memories during these trips, but her greatest joy was becoming a grandmother to Bill's children, Jessica and George.
In retirement, Lola volunteered her time at the St. Andrew's Early Childhood Center. She remained active at the Clay Road YMCA, enjoying swimming and playing dominoes with friends. She also enjoyed knitting and crafts and sold her work at craft sales.
Lola is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth of Lander, Wyoming and her son, Bill of Houston, Texas and grandchildren Jessica and George.
Family and friends gathered to celebrate Lola's life during a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 21, in the sanctuary of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 1353 Witte Road in Houston, Texas.
In lieu of flowers the family requested contributions to St. Andrew Lutheran Church.
