Loong Yiu Ngao (also known as “Tommy” to others and as “Pop” to us) was born in Canton, China. He was the youngest of three children, with an older sister and older brother, both also deceased. Loong Yiu immigrated to Hong Kong in the late 1940s. There, he and his wife, Chun Kuk had five children. In 1967, Loong Yiu immigrated to the U.S. and lived first in Clarksdale, MS. Several years later, he moved to Houston, TX where he maintained his permanent residence and where his youngest daughter was born.
Loong Yiu worked tirelessly, six days a week for his family at grocery stores and restaurants. He finally retired from work in 1995 where he was then able to spend more time at home with family.
While he didn’t travel the world extensively, he was able to return to see China and Hong Kong in 1997. He also had opportunities to see San Francisco, Chicago, Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando and other cities in the U.S. He enjoyed tending to his vegetable/fruit garden in the back yard, listening to Chinese opera music, watching Chinese soap operas and seeing his many grandchildren during weekly family dinner nights, birthdays and holidays. He was also a curious tinkerer, working with many items he collected over the years to create a useful tool or contraption. One such example was an item was used to pick ripened persimmons high up on the tree limbs.
Loong Yiu leaves behind his wife of over sixty years, Chun Kuk Wong Ngao, son Bill Gaw, daughter Teresa Fischer and husband Jeff, daughter Wanda Wong, daughter Linda Ng and husband Raymond, son Bob Ngao and wife Nancy, daughter Cindy Gee and husband Andy, grandchildren Erica Belk and husband Jeremiah, Lauren Wong, Megan Gaw, Michael Ng, Samantha Ng, Natalie Gee, Grace Ngao, Bradley Gee, Emilie Gee, great grandchild Asher Belk, and many relatives and friends. We would like to thank the doctors and nurses at St. Joseph’s/Select Specialty Hospital and also to Lillia, Maria & Carmen for caring for our “Pop.”
