

Lue Ethel (Johnson) Hicks was granted her angel wings on January 29, 2013. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that she touched in so many ways. Those she touched understood the quality of her wisdom. Lue Ethel (Johnson) Hicks was born August 25, 1917 to Amanda Swan and Samuel Baldwin in Eagle Lake, Texas. In her early years, Lue Ethel committed her life to Christ. She was a long standing member of Northside Antioch Baptist Church where J.C. O'Connor (deceased) was her pastor and later in life joined Little Union Missionary Baptist Church, were she attended until her passing. She married Thaddeus Johnson in 1935. To this union three children were born: Thaddeus Johnson, Verlynne (Johnson) Hammond (deceased) and Earline (Johnson) Robinson. Later she married Rufus Hicks (deceased) in 1951. She attended Kennedy Elementary, Harper & E. O. Smith Jr. High Schools. After many years of hard work and perseverance, Mrs. Hicks graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School in 1954. Lue Ethel worked at Jefferson Davis Hospital as a licensed vocational nurse for seven years. She began her career as Director of Food and Nutrition at Settegast Elementary and B.C. Elmore Junior and Senior High School in 1952. While working for the North Forest School District, she would go door-to-door in the Settegast community to take census for the district. She became the Directing Manager of the combined schools cafeteria for a number of years. While working and raising her family she graduated from North Harris County College on May 9, 1975 with a Certification in Institutional Food Service. While managing the cafeteria she touched the lives of many teachers and students. No child ever went hungry while Lue Ethel Hicks was around, as she made certain each child had hot and nutritious meals. After forty years of faithful and dedicated service, Lue Ethel retired from North Forest Independent School District in 1994.
