The day of September 23, 1913, arrived a baby girl born to Ben Jenkins and Annie Johnson. They named her Lula Belle Jenkins, one of eight siblings. She attended public school in Brazos County. Lula went on to start her journey of life in Bryan Texas where she found a church home and became a member of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist church. She was later united in Holy Matrimony to Henry Ashley whom preceded her in death. Lula later moved to Fort Worth, Texas to pursue a career as a child care provider. Years later she was discovered by her beauty and became a full time model for Foley's clothing and fashion stores, until she retired and relocated back to Bryan Texas. Lula would travel to and from California to Houston to visit family. While in Houston she was introduced to Rev. S. B. Parker of Greater Zion Baptist Church by her elder sister Arizona. She made it her second church home whenever in town to worship with family. Lula loved the outdoors. One of her favorite things to do was fishing in her spare time. Most of all she loved taking care of her family and friends, in a time of need or just because it was her pleasure by cooking a meal. opening up her home to all that would come. Although she never had children, she had that motherly instinct and care for all of her nieces and nephews, grand and great. She was a mentor to all of them and treated them as her own. Lula could also be stubborn and feisty. You also did not want to mess with her when it came to her family and her clothes! Her niece, Wilma Lynn became her caregiver and companion until she had to be hospitalized and therefore expired. Her life was long lived in the flesh and she fought to the very end as she transitioned beyond this veil on July 1, 2018. She will be missed. As we are allowed by God let go, He has already prepared her destination from the foundation of the world. Lula was preceded in death by both of her parents; two brothers, Nicky Jenkins and P.J. Jenkins; five sisters, Arizona Ashley, Bertha Johnson, Ruby Johnson, Benny Jenkins, and Cleo Wilson. Those that are left to cherish her life are, a host of nieces, nephews, grand and great, cousins and a host of extended family and friends.
