Lane attended Wichita State University, The American College, and the Purdue Pension and Profit Sharing Institute. Retirement and investments were his professional passion. He was the founder of several related companies including Compensation Planning, Inc., Kerns Capital Management, M.L. Kerns and the KCM Macro Trends Mutual Fund, to which he served as Lead Portfolio Manager. He also served as a General Agent for New England Life, and was instrumental in developing the first generation of daily-valued 401k recordkeeping software.
Lane served on the summer faculties of the University of Connecticut, University of Colorado and University of Puget Sound, teaching retirement planning for business and professionals. He held the industry designations of Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC). He was a board member for the National Association of Active Investment Managers, and, during his early career, a frequent qualifier, and committee chair, to the Million Dollar Round Table, Top of the Table.
Lane was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Fern Kerns and his brother, Bill Kerns. Survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Billie J. Kerns; son, Marty Kerns and wife, Cari; daughter, Michelle LaDoucieur and her husband, David; grandchildren, Hayden and Riley Kerns, Caroline and Ashley LaDoucieur. Also surviving is Lane's service companion, Sir Duke.
A memorial service was held 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 345 Piney Point in Houston, Texas 77024.
