

Mabel Lee Hunter was born in Freestone County, Texas on January 6, 1922. The first born of five siblings to William and Tinnie Viola Brown. Mabel’s family moved to Oakwood, Texas where she attended public school and graduated Valedictorian of her class. At an early age she accepted Christ while attending St. Paul Shiloh A.M.E. Church and was a member of the Redoak Chapter #84 Order of the Eastern Star in Oakwood, Texas. Upon relocation to Houston, Texas, she joined Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church until her health failed. She was also a member of the Grand Court Order of Calanthe. Mabel was united in holy matrimony to Taft Hunter in 1957. She worked and retired from St. Luke Hospital after 44 years of service. Mabel is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Taft; son Taft Leroy; daughter, Lucy Sayles; sisters, Lora B. Campbell, Claricia Johnson and Johnnie Faye Campbell and brother Waddell Brown. Mabel leaves behind to cherish her memories: Kathleen McQueen, daughter; Chanel McQueen Harrell, granddaughter; Frederick T. Kennedy, Demetrice J. Thomas and Timothy Daniels, grandsons; Doris Echols, sister and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
