
Marcell was born February 25, 1922 to Robert and Glenn Parry in Carson, Iowa. Following a lengthy illness, she died at the age of 88 on December 16, 2010, in Sugar Land, Texas.
Marcell will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Judith Anderson VanHorn; her brother, Lane Parry, his wife Patricia, and their children Paula Pilling and Greg Parry, and Paula’s son, Brad, along with a host of friends.
After graduating from Carson High School, Marcell moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where she met and married Wesley Anderson. They had one daughter, Judi. In 1953, they moved to Houston, Texas, which Marcell adopted as her hometown. Her marriage to Wesley ended in 1958. In November 1959, she married Vernon Bailey, who preceded her in death in October 1982.
As an active member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), she served on many committees, as Secretary of the Board and as an Elder, and was active in the Disciples Women Ministry. In her youth, she was a member of Carson Presbyterian Church, where she played the piano during her teen years.
Marcell was a 65+-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She served as Worthy Matron of Woodland #696, Oak Forest #1080 and Katy #1121. Her favorite Grand Chapter Appointment was as Secretary to the Worthy Grand Matron, Jean Nesbitt. In 1989, she was elected to a 5-year term on the Board of Directors, Grand Chapter Benevolences, and served as Chair in 1993-1994.
Marcell’s work history included, but was not limited to, working as a Secretary in the City of Houston Right of Way Department and as a Legal Secretary for John H. Crooker, Sr. at Fulbright, Crooker, Freeman, Bates and Jaworski. In 1978, she opened Marcell’s Secretarial Service.
A memorial service celebrating Marcell’s life will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at First Christian Church, 1601 Sunset Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77005. Telephone 713 526 2561. http://www.fcchou.org/
