Mario Flores Romo, lovingly known as Papi, Abuelito, Grandpa, Old Man, Viejo, Mayito, LeRoy, Professor, and "Super Mario," passed away peacefully, leaving behind a lifetime of memories, laughter, love, and lessons.
He was a proud father to Albert (Rhoda†), Jorge (Janet), Victor (Alma), Ernest aka Ernie†, and Linda (Michael Olson). He adored his grandchildren: Rita Kay, Reed, Stephanie, Jonathon, Victor Jr., Ivan, and Maya. And was blessed with many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him tremendous joy.
Born on May 14, 1929, in Múzquiz, Coahuila, Mexico, Mario was raised in a time when hard work, perseverance, and responsibility were deeply valued. From an early age, these principles became a part of his character, forming the foundation of the man everyone came to know and love.
Mario left his home town, as a young man, to attend the Escuela Normal de Coahuila in Saltillo and pursue his calling as a teacher. This decision carried a heavy burden because it meant parting ways with the family who raised him. His character continued to grow, attaining a greater understanding for compassion, discipline, and resilience.
In 1952, Mario married the love of his life, Angelina Rivera. In 1954, they moved to Houston, Texas, in search of the American dream. This realized dream included four sons, one daughter, and an assortment of beloved animals. Mario’s creativity and ingenuity were evident in family life. If something was broken, Mario could fix it. It didn't matter if all he had was a nail, a screw, or a roll of duct tape. To his family, he could repair nearly anything, and if he couldn't, he'd find a way.
Music was another of Mario's many gifts. He learned to play the guitar as a young teenager and continued writing songs, composing music, and singing throughout his life. Music was woven into his life’s fabric. He found great joy in the heartfelt lyrics of rancheras, the romance of boleros, the vibrant sounds of mariachi, and the timeless melodies of the big band era. Whether listening to Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, David Allan Coe, or watching The Lawrence Welk Show each week, music filled his heart. It connected to his Mexican heritage, stirred cherished memories, and remained a constant source of happiness.
We will remember his richly vivid stories about growing up in Múzquiz, his quick wit, his mischievous sense of humor, and the way he made everyone feel welcome. Several of the family's favorite memories include the often-scheduled weekend dance parties at his home, affectionately known as "El Compadre Ballroom." Friends and family would gather to enjoy his famous barbecue chicken while Mario, the Flores sons, and friends filled the backyard with blues, country, and whatever music kept everyone dancing, singing, and laughing late into the evening. If you're wondering how "El Compadre Ballroom" obtained its name, just ask one of his children.
He lived nearly a full century and family lovingly nicknamed him "Super Mario" towards his later years because his spirit remained powerfully strong. He confronted each challenge with determination, humor, and faith, reminding all that real strength comes from the heart.
Mario was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Angelina, and his son, Ernie, both of whom he missed dearly. For nearly twenty years after the passing of Angelina, Mario carried her memory in his heart every day. He missed her deeply, spoke of her often, and held quiet faith for the day they would be reunited. We find comfort in knowing they are all together again, planning the next garage party.
Our hearts are broken yet full of gratitude. We were blessed with a father, grandfather, and friend who taught us how to work hard, love deeply, laugh often, and never give up. That is the legacy he leaves with us, and one we will carry forward.
Rest peacefully, Super Mario.
We'll take it from here.
