November 12,1930 - January 14, 2017
Martha was an extraordinary woman. But not in the way one might think. While her accomplishments were those that impacted many who crossed her path, they weren’t the ones that garnered the attention for award. During her lifetime, the events and actions that resulted in her greatness were mostly questioned, sometimes unnoticed and often ostracized.
Martha was a survivor. From the outside looking in, it appeared she was escaping the difficulties of life by retreating to the small quarters of her mind, shutting out her responsibilities. It appeared she left the rest of us to deal with the chaos of life. On the surface, it appeared she gave up.
But Martha was still there through it all. She inadvertently taught us all how to be stronger, more compassionate people. How to forgive and especially to understand that all is not quite as it appears. There is a bigger picture and God is in control. Through her faith and perseverance, she gave us a foundation that proved to make us better individuals. She gave us determination and purpose. She taught us that adversity is the groundwork for real greatness and something we are all capable of achieving. It was her incredible strength in her final moments that reminds us of the gifts she gave us.
Martha is preceded in death by her mother Angela and father Phillipe Alderete, brothers John and Fernando, and sister Domatia. She is survived by brothers Bernadino and Pedro. She is also survived by 5 daughters and their husbands, 18 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
