Martin Louis Bacon affectionately nicknamed "Duberry" was born June 1, 1941 to Leslie and Margaret Bacon in Houston, Texas. Martin is the seventh of ten children born to this union. Martin attended elementary and high school at James D. Burrus and Booker T. Washington High School respectively. He graduated from high school in 1960. In August of 1963, Martin and his remaining siblings at home moved from Houston to Los Angeles California. Though his career ambition was to be a physical therapist, for financial reasons this dream was not realized. However, because of his math skills he became an expert machinist, building significant and complex circuity parts for the space industry at two different companies over his working career. Martin was an avid sport's fan, but football was his love. This love of the game began in high school where he was a trainer for the Booker T. Washington Eagles. Through this association with coaches and players, he learned plays and strategies on how to win. He took this knowledge and became an excellent coach in Pop Warner Football, winning championships at various levels. He often bragged about his players who went on to play college football and a few at the professional level. His style of addressing players always began with "son". In jest, his players would mimic his voice commands by saying "son" followed by some comical direction. As a result of his success at the lower level of coaching he was offered an assistant coaching position at Chaffey College in Alta Loma, California. In earlier years, other hobbies included small game hunting, fishing, gardening and barbequing. Like most men who barbequed, he thought his was the best and would easily give unsolicited advice on how to improve yours. As a youngster growing up in Houston he always had a garden of some type and this continued while in Los Angeles. His love of the earth and what it could produce fascinated him. His dream was to have a farm with horses, cows and other farm animals and of course a large garden to produce his own fruit and vegetables. Martin was born into a family with deep Christian values. Upon his return to Houston in the mid-2000s he continued his worship of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He served faithfully as a Deacon at New Mount Olive Church. His faith was unwavering, even during the most painful moments during his sickness. Martin succumbed to his illness in the early morning on Sunday, September 28, 2014. His dimpled smile and words of encouragement will be truly missed. Martin was preceded in death by one daughter La Shanda Bacon. He is survived by his daughter, Marcy, two sons Martin Alan Bacon and Michael Barragan; one grandson Isaiah Bacon, three sisters, Cynthia Covington, Carlos Ann Butler and Loretta Singletary; two brothers, Leslie and Anthony Bacon, two brothers-in-law, Robert Covington and Julius Singletary; one sister-in-law Eileen Bacon; seven nephews, eleven nieces, many great nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. "It's been a long hard fight for you; may you rest in peace, our brother"
