Mary Jessie Briones

She attended Breckenridge Elementary, Marshall Jr. High, and graduated from Jeff Davis High School class of 1960. She retired from the City of Houston in 1992 after 30 years of service with HPD’S Traffic Division and as a court clerk with the Houston Municipal Courts.

She loved shopping, traveling, and listening to her music. In the late 1970’s and through the 1980’s she volunteered with the Our Lady of Sorrows church youth group. Under the leadership of Sister Jackie KIingsbury. Mary worked with young teens. She traveled with the kids to Colorado, New Mexico, Ohio, and throughout Texas.

The highlight of her work with the youth group was when she accompanied some of her kids in 1984 to the Catholic youth conference in Rome Italy. The event, which was held on Palm Sunday, included a mass in the square in front of the Basilica of Saint John Lutheran, followed by a procession to St. Peter’s Square. Pope John Paul II spoke to the young people and Mother Theresa accompanied him on the stage. Mary treasured these memories forever.

Mary Jessie is survived by her brother Florencio G. Briones, sister-in-laws Consuelo Briones Anderson and Mary Louise Briones. Mary Jessie is also survived by her nieces Cynthia Franssen, Sandra Lynn Trevino, Ann Marie Frank, Christine Briones, her nephews James Briones, Luis Briones and numerous cousins and friends. Two of her special friends and classmates from Jeff Davis are Cory McCabe and Vicenta Rodriguez.

She was preceded in death by her parents Florencio M. and Teresa Briones, her brothers Raymond Briones, Chris Briones, Fernando Briones, and baby sister Sylvia Briones.

A lifelong Houston resident Mary Jessie will be missed by many.

A visitation for Mary will be held Wednesday, December 4, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home. A funeral mass will occur Thursday, December 5, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 3006 Kashmere St, Houston, TX 77026. A committal service will occur Thursday, December 5, 2024 at 12:00, at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
