Mary Margaret Gunter Domask joined our lord on the 23rd of July, 2011, in Houston, ending her battle with Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 86. Mary Margaret was born in Port Arthur, TX, on September 1st, 1924 to Alto Amos Gunter and Mary Lucy Greenwood Gunter. She has one sister, Martha Ann Gunter Abel, who currently resides in Pennsylvania.
Mary Margaret graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur at the age of 16 and went to the University of Texas in Austin where she graduated with her Doctorate of Juris Prudence at the age of 21. She was a member of Alpha Phi sorority and cherished lifelong friendships with Eleanor Domaschk Bradley and Mary Black. She moved back to Port Arthur and practiced law with her father until she married her lifelong partner William G. (Bill) Domaschk after his return from service in World War II.
Mary Margaret and Bill moved to Austin, where Bill finished his PhD in Chemical Engineering. They later returned to Houston, where Bill worked for Humble Oil (now Exxon), to raise their family. They are survived by William A. Domask and his sons, Warren and David; Lucy Domask Holt and her husband, Barry and their sons, Stephen, William, and David; Susan Domask Moody and her daughter, Sarah; Richard Domask and his wife, Catherine Arnold Domask and their daughters, Anna, Mary, and Rachel; Margaret Domask; Madeline Domask and her husband Mark Willis and their children, Jonathan, Matthew, and Kelly; and great-grandchild Stephen Holt.
Mary Margaret continued practicing family law as her children grew up. She was extensively involved in her community, being a member and volunteer in the Garden Club, St. Cecilia’s Women’s Club, the Republican Women’s Club, Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, AIChE Women’s Club, University of Texas Alumni, A&M Alumni, Daughters of the American Revolution, and others. She was an avid reader of local, national, and world events, and could engage in conversation with anyone from any background. Her passions were her faith, her family, helping others, and travel. She was devoted to visiting her friends when they were ill. She wanted everyone to get along, and she always stressed the importance of education.
Mary Margaret and Bill took their children on summer trips throughout the United States and Canada, sharing history and broadening their children’s view of the land, industry, institutions of higher learning, and ways of life of the variety that makes up our United States.
Mary Margaret led a long and interesting life. Special thanks go to Carmen Martinez and the caring staff at the Hampton on Kempwood. She found strength through St. Cecilia’s Catholic community and St. Andrew’s Lutheran congregation (Bill’s home church). Visitation with the family was held from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2011 at Waltrip Funeral Directors. A Memorial Mass was celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc.
In lieu of usual remembrances, donations may be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2242 West Holcomb Blvd. Houston, TX, 77030, or the charity of your choice.
