Mary Irma Hernandez, 71, was born in Houston, Texas, on September 30, 1949. She was the third of four girls born to Jose and Esperanza Gil. Those closest to her, called her Irma. On February 25, 2021, Irma was called home to be reunited with her parents and the man she so dearly loved, Juan Hernandez.
Irma leaves behind to cherish her memories, a son and a daughter, Michael Gil and Debra Hernandez. These are the ones who are honored to call her MOM. Her children were her greatest loves.
Irma is also survived by three sisters, Yolanda Silva (Arturo), Olga Mendoza (Daniel), and Dora Solis (Henry). Irma is also survived by three grandchildren, Joshua, Ariel, and Mickey; along with several nieces and nephews.
Irma was a proud alum (class of 1967), of Jefferson Davis High School (now known as Northside High) in the Near Northside community. Education was always at the forefront of the Gil family, so it is not surprising that Irma continued a higher education, attending Sam Houston State University where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Teaching. After graduating from college, she went to work for Houston Independent School District (HISD), where Irma taught special education for 41 years at Burnet Elementary. This would become her greatest passion. She took great pride in educating her students.
Irma also enjoyed traveling with her family, making ceramics, crafting and cheering on her hometown Astros and Texans. Her joy for life was displayed in her infectious smile and laughter.
