

Mary Louise Lowery Schlett was born was born May 21, 1938 at Scott and White Hospital, Temple, Texas. Mary's father, Dr. William Walter Lowery used the special occasion to train a group of med students, which were under his supervision.
Little Mary was born into a very medical family. Besides having a physician for a dad, her mother, Pinky (Pinkie) Angeline Terrell Lowrey, was the second (1921) female to be licensed as a pharmacist in the state of Texas.
Mary was named in honor of her maternal grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Cox Terrell.
In 1944, Dr. Lowrey and family moved to Pasadena, Texas in time for Mary to begin first grade at Cruz Elementary School. Mary found herself attending St. Agnes Academy, a private girls' school located a few blocks from her parents'' office.
After Dr. Lowrey's passing, Mary's mother felt that life would be more secure in a not-so-large city. Beginning with fourth grade, Mary's home was Port Arthur, Texas. She graduated from Port Arthur High School (Thomas Jefferson High School) in May, 1956.
In the fall of 1956, Mary entered Lamar College of Technology in Beaumont, Texas. At Lamar University, Mary received her degree in Education. She and her fiancée, Floyd Schlett, graduated together on August 26, 1961. That Fall, Mary accepted a position with the Houston HISD, teaching primary school. Floyd also accepted a teaching position in Mercedes, Texas.
In June, 1963, Mary and Floyd were married at the First Methodist Church in Beaumont, Texas. They were married for 60 years and lived at their home in Houston for 57 years. They were not blessed with children of their own, but they enjoyed many joyful opportunities to work with children.
Mary and Floyd have worked for many years in the Democratic Party, starting in the early 70's. Mary and Floyd served 48 years as Precinct Chairs for Precinct 270. Mary was also elected to the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in 1996. Mary also served as a member of the Texas Democratic Executive Committee (TDEC).
Mary and Floyd loved to visit Ruidoso, New Mexico every summer until 2022 when a fire destroyed their vacation paradise.
Mary is predeceased by her cousins Diane Miller, Maggie Mosher, Delores Egger, Doni Egger, Claudia Sweth, Kim Hixon, and Dorothy Holland, all from California. She is survived by her husband Floyd Schlett and cousins Margo Anderson, Kobe Staten, and Eric Wagner, all from Texas.
Visitation with the family was held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 23, 2024 at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Road in Houston, Texas, where services began at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday in the RL Waltrip Venue. A private burial was held in Beaumont, Texas.
