August 1, 1919 – March 19, 2013
Mattie Lee Stockton was born August 1, 1919 in Angleton, Texas to Ada Irene and Thomas Richard Holt and passed away March 19, 2013 in Humble, Texas. Mattie was one of nine children.
After moving to Houston when she was 15, she worked as a waitress at a local diner and later at a restaurant where she met her husband, Robert O. Stockton. Mattie and Bob had three children: Robert, Leora and Nellene.
A woman with an undeniable work ethic, she worked most of her life cooking, cleaning and caring for others. In fact, she worked for over 30 years for The Learning Tree at all of their area schools.
Mattie enjoyed bowling immensely and participated in bowling leagues for over 60 years. Also an avid fan of baseball and basketball, she rarely missed “her boys” play a game. Mattie was a die-hard Astros and Rockets fan, and cheered them on through the good times and bad. She also had a love for gardening and particularly caring for her roses. For a number of years, she volunteered at Mercer Arboretum’s March Mart plant sale.
Foremost, Mattie was a faithful servant of the Lord and a member of the Humble First Assembly of God Church for over 40 years. She was well known for providing cookies and juice every Sunday to the pre-school classes, and assisted with preparing meals for many church functions. She devoted her life to serving God.
Mattie was generous, compassionate, resilient, completely unselfish, reliable, and truly loved by everyone whose lives she touched. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but we are all confident that she’s now kicking up gold dust on the streets of Heaven.
Mattie is preceded in death by husband Robert O. Stockton, grandson Scotty Stockton, son Robert L. Stockton, and grandson Justin Blaine. She is survived by sister Georgie Nuckles; children Leora Breaker and husband, Doug; and Nellene Harvey; grandchildren Birch Blaine and wife, Karen; Byron Blaine; Rhonda Springer and husband, Carl; Jeff Harvey and wife, Kim; Kaci Woodrome and husband, Jeremy; Rabevra Ofcharzak and husband, Alton; ten great grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
