Maureen Malone was born at number 8 Airedale Avenue, Chiswick, London on December 18, 1947 where she grew up with her parents, William and Margaret Martland, and her older brother John. She was very close with her Dad and as a young girl her weekly thrill was going to Fulham Football Club matches with him. She loved music and was an original Beatlemaniac! She bought every single Andy Williams album. She and her good friend Christine had many adventures, including appearing on Top of the Pops and Jukebox Jury on BBC Television.
After leaving school, Mum worked in and around London including several years at the Commonwealth Institute. At that time, she met John Lovell and they enjoyed the “swinging” London life of the 60s and 70s together. They married in 1970 and had three children: Suzie, Matthew and Howard. Each was born in a different town and Maureen was the original supermom, raising three kids under 5 in addition to attending Motherwell Tech where she earned her highers. John’s job as a Merchant Seaman took them many places: Homes in West Kensington, and Ilford in England, and Law Village and Lanark, in Scotland. They literally sailed around the world on the mv Rupert de Larrinaga, a general cargo ship. Visiting Poland, South Africa, Singapore, China, Japan, Panama and Greece, this was a very memorable experience and gave Maureen a lifelong love of sunshine and sunny places.
On Halloween, 1982, the family moved to Houston, TX where Maureen happily made it her hometown for 36 years. With her big heart, beautiful smile and that English accent she was a perfect fit for Texas. She made many friends and often socialized at happy hours. She embraced the Texas culture and enjoyed the friendliness of folks. Maureen prided herself on her career in human resources. She was emphatic with co-workers and held great positions at Louis Shanks, Southwest Bank in St. Louis and the Hyatt Regency. While working there, she transferred from Houston to San Antonio to help open the new Hill Country resort. After that, Maureen moved to St. Louis, then back to Houston where she met George Stokes in 1997. They had a lot of fun together, especially at the West Crest Pub. In 2003, she moved to London to help with her first grandchild, Maddie. She stayed for a couple years and even started a knitting business, Granny Mo’s. Eventually she wound up back in Houston and reconnected with George, where they spent many good years together.
Maureen was never happier than when she was watching the Astros. She had evolved from being a Fan of Fulham Football Club to an Astros Fanatic! Whether at the Astrodome or Minute Maid Park the third base line was her happy place. She had many interests over the years including politics, knitting, interior design, music, a passionate love of tennis and what she called "those silly reality shows of mine". She loved to tell stories and also loved her dogs, Queenie, ColIns and especially Bogie. She was a history buff, too. A big fan of Halloween, she was excellent at makeup and costumes. And nobody made better roast potatoes and Shepard’s pie. She was eager to celebrate everyone’s birthdays, always thinking ahead and planning special surprises. She adored her six grandchildren: Maddie, Ian, Toby, Owen, Miles, Sean, and daughter-in-laws Audrey and Liz and son-in-law Adrian.
Maureen had the biggest heart and loved her family more than anything. One of her favorite things to do was go out to a nice restaurant or a quiet friendly bar to have a glass of wine or a cocktail. Maureen was a passionate, intelligent woman and will be missed by all so much. Her lasting legacy is to pass on the importance of family togetherness, no matter what.
