On Monday, September 2, 2024 Mavis Cora Hansen Doyle, a beloved wife and mother departed this life. She was 92 years old. She was born August 1, 1932 in Cresbard, South Dakota to Frederick H. Hansen and Edith Rose Gross Hansen. She was one of 6 children. Three older brothers, one older sister and one younger sister.
She met her husband Darrell Francis Doyle on a blind date in 1950 while he was on leave before shipping out to Korea. They communicated via letters while he was deployed and upon his return they were joined in marriage at Fort Riley, Kansas, November 21, 1952. She spent the next 21 years as an Army wife, raising 5 children. Dallas was born in El Paso, Texas, Michael was born in Wiesbaden Germany, Denise was born in Deadwood, South Dakota, Mitzie and Shelly were both born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. As an Army wife she lived in many different places and saw much of the world. After their retirement they moved to Houston, Texas where they spent the last 47 years.
Mavis was a creative individual and expressed it by sewing clothes for her girls, doing ceramics, crocheting, and owned a flower shop. She and Darrell spent many years square dancing and round dancing where she sewed many of her own outfits. In later years she enjoyed painting and provided many beautiful canvases to her children and other members of the family. Blue was her favorite color. She was a great fan of Elvis Presley, Clint Eastwood, whom she got to shake his hand, and the author Zane Grey. She collected all his books. She loved playing scrabble with the kids and grandkids. She was tough to beat even 10 years into her Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Darrell Francis Doyle after 50 years of marriage; her parents, Fred and Edith Hansen; her brothers Carol Hansen, Earl Hansen and Dale Hansen; and her sister Muriel Hansen McGlade. She is survived by her children Dallas Doyle and his wife Varleen (Dana) of Waller, Texas; Mike Doyle and his wife Mikie (Sperte) of Lewisville, Texas; Denise and her husband Steve Slayton of Conroe, Texas; Mitzie Doyle of Spring, Texas; Shelly and her husband Paul Perez of Conroe, Texas; 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter as well as her sister Delores Hansen Neptune of Golden, Colorado along with many nieces and nephews.
Services to celebrate her life will be Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home and Cemetery located at 13102 North Freeway, Houston, Texas 77060. Visitation begins at 10:00 am with services starting at 12:00 pm with interment to follow at the Houston Veterans Memorial Cemetery. There will not be a graveside service.
