

Melvin P. Proctor went to be with the Lord on November 1, 2021, at his home in Houston, Texas, surrounded by his loving family. Melvin was born August 8, 1928 in Cisco, Eastland County, Texas to Ima Leveridge and Jesse Elbert Proctor. He had two brothers, J.E. Jr, Sterling Lee and three half-sisters, Opal, Lottie and Ruth, all deceased. He also had many nieces and nephews.
He is survived by the love of his life, Rita Henderson Proctor, with whom he enjoyed 72 years of a devoted and steadfast marriage. He will be deeply missed by his four children; son, Stephen Jeffrey and wife, Robin and grandson; Evan of Houston, TX; daughter, Donna Rae and husband, Fred Schuster of San Juan, TX; grandchildren, Lindsie, Taylor, wife, Marabeth, (Ellie and Tate) and Courtney, husband Patrick Moore, (Juliet and Jenna Cate) all of McAllen, TX; daughter, Linda Diane and husband, Randy Marceau of Alamo Heights, TX; grand-children, Madison and wife, Elizabeth, (Kaki, Gracie and Clay) of Alamo Heights, TX; grandchild, Travis and wife Mackenzie (Simone) of San Anselmo, CA; and grandchild Meredith and husband, Tyler Hays of Dallas, TX; daughter, Gwen Anne and husband, Stan Barton of Rollingwood, TX; grandchildren, Stancil III, Grant and Brooks.
Mel attended Cisco Junior College and University of Houston. He served in the US Army, Military Police Detachment No.1, Manhattan Project, Oak Ridge, TN.
Mr. Proctor was an executive with the Thorpe Organization for 30 years, retiring in 1986. At the time of his retirement, he was Executive Vice President and a Director of Thorpe Corporation, President of Thorpe Products Company and President of Sunbelt Constructors, Inc. He served as president of Regency Council of Co-owners, South Padre Island, TX., from 1988 to 2002. He was also an amateur genealogist and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, a member of Golfcrest Country Club, Pearland, Tx. He was a longtime member of First Methodist Church, Houston. His close walk with the Lord contributed to his deep relationships with people and his successes in life.
His grandchildren loved and adored their “Popi.” He made each one feel special and attended many of their events and activities. He also loved fishing, hunting and golfing with his buddies, a very special circle of friends. During his time at the Thorpe Organization, he developed deep and meaningful relationships which he maintained throughout his lifetime.
The family is so very grateful to Rosie, Veronica and Amelia for the love and care given to their father during the last year of his life. A special thanks to Marbella Tenorio for 25 years of love, support and service. Her son “Little Joe” held a special place in his heart.
A celebration of his life will be held Sunday morning, the 7th of November at 11:00 AM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home in the Grand Chapel, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023, with burial to follow. A visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service, at 10:00 AM.
