Melvin Joe Washington was born in Winona, TX on June 1, 1949 to Booker T. Washington and Etta Moore Washington and was called home on November 5, 2017. Melvin was one of four children and received his formal education through the Winona Public School System, where he excelled in his studies.

Melvin attended Tyler Junior College and the University of Houston. He earned an associate degree in drafting in 1969 and worked in the oil and gas industry for United Gas, Entex and Exxon from the 1970's through the mid 1990's. In later years, he worked as a substitute teacher for the Spring, Klein Forest and Spring Branch Independent School Districts.

Melvin met his school sweetheart, Sadie Marie Scott, in 1964. They were united in Holy Matrimony on November 18, 1970. To this union was born four children: Zandra, Maurice, Sonny and Stacy. Melvin lived in Houston, TX, where he enjoyed many hobbies including gardening and carpentry. Melvin was artistic by nature and loved to engage in activities that made use of his creative talents. He had a keen eye for architectural design. He designed and build outdoor waterfalls for his home. He also liked to read. One of his favorite pastimes was listening to music.

Melvin Washington was baptized and accepted Christ as his savior. He made Fifth Ward Church of Christ his church home, serving faithfully at the communion table and as an usher for years until his health declined. Melvin enjoyed studying biblical history and scripture. He also enjoyed sharing the word of God with others.

Melvin was my 1st cousin ," big "brother/protector and friend throughout our entire lives ( the good and challenging times over the past 60 years).
We were play mates (with a lot of fun AND mischief) school /college mates, and family getting married and having children about the same time.He was very smart ,dressed like a movie star, always looked after my best interest including finding me a husband and ensuring that we were both saved believing in our Lord and Savior J
esus Christ. His love of family, smile, laughter spiriuality, and fighting spirit will remain with me forever.I am sad but also grateful that Melvin can rest in peace as he is no longer suffering and having him in my life for so long. Our condolences to Sadie ,kids ,grandkids, sisters, extended family and friends. We loved him so much.Ervin Jean ,Charles and family.
