Mike was an alumni of the University of Houston and an honors graduate of Houston Community College. Mike’s love of learning led him to become a history teacher but in every facet of life, Mike was always a teacher. He taught academics, friendship, forgiveness and kindness. He was a member of the Texas Amateur Archeological Association and loved to walk the fields and dirt roads of Texas searching for arrowheads. He was an expert in both Native American and American History. Mike was happiest in the open outdoors – in the Hill Country, in the Mountains, just sitting on a rock or standing high up on a cliff - imagining the history of the place where he stood.
Mike was a t-ball baseball coach, a dedicated and faithful fan of the Katy Tigers as well as the University of Texas Longhorns. Mike spent his life surrounded by family and friends that he touched in amazing ways. He was always happy, sharing his bright smile and the twinkle in his beautiful blue eyes.
Mike is survived by his beloved Debra Ann Maler, his mother Lela Mae Maler, brother Clifton and wife Darleen Maler, Dennis Maler, Cynthia Younger and husband Eric, and his nieces and nephews Nathan Maler, Melissa Maler, Emily Ann Maler, Sara Schoenhart, Leslie Schoenhart, Leo Schnee, Matthew Schnee and Carlee Joan Schnee. Including the many kids who referred to him as “Uncle Mike” and he called his own: Cris and Austin Olsovsky, Nicklaus and Brandon Grisham, Shawn and Rachel Ledet and many, many others who knew how much he loved them.
