Nellie Moser, 96, died peacefully in her home in Katy, Texas on Friday, November 21. She was the fourth child of Mr. and Mrs. James S. Elledge. Nellie grew up with her brother and two sisters in the teacherage of their parents’ two-room school at Shady Grove in Osage County, Oklahoma.
Nellie graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1945 and went on to graduate with a degree in mathematics from Northeastern State College in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. While a student there, she met Curtis Moser, whom she would marry on September 1, 1950. After college, she worked as a statistician for Standard Oil of Indiana (Stanolind), leaving the business world just before the 1956 birth of her first son, Alan. Sally followed two years later, and Adam arrived in 1969 after a family transfer to Houston. Nellie was a devoted mother and a passionate advocate for her children. In addition to faithful participation in her Sunday School class and church choir before and after moving to Texas, she dedicated countless hours to addressing the needs of children with special needs. In that effort, she was among the leadership of the local and state organizations now known as The ARC and its youth auxiliary, as well as the Texas Special Olympics. She also found time to tutor students in mathematics. As an educator, she was particularly adept at assessing the student’s needs and employing teaching strategies strategized to capitalize on the student’s own learning style. After another family move, this time to Saudi Arabia, Nellie taught in the industrial education department of ARAMCO, fostering the math skills of promising employees of the company. Nellie could be counted on to lead fund drives, organize bake sales and pancake suppers for causes such as sending the high school band to perform for an NFL half-time, and to be a cheerleader for Sally’s softball games as well as for Adam’s baseball successes.
The family move to Saudi Arabia afforded Nellie an opportunity to travel far beyond the wildest expectations of her youth. Expat leave requirements led to travel to England and Scotland; Germany, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands; Greece and Turkey; India, Singapore, The Philippines, and Hong Kong, as well as visits to family and sites across the United States. After retirement to Katy, the veteran traveler continued visits to her sons’ homes as well as trips to Iceland, to England (including a trip to the Henley Royal Regatta), and to Paris.
Nellie was predeceased by her daughter, Sally, by her husband of over 57 years, Curt, and recently by her daughter-in-law, Lisa. Her sons Alan (Elizabeth) and Adam survive. She was particularly proud of her grandsons Sam, Win (Gaby), and Garret, each of whom achieved a milestone academic graduation during her last year. She was happy to be Aunt Nell or Ms. Nell to countless friends and adopted family of all ages. Her family deeply appreciates all the care and concern of neighbors, friends, extended family, healthcare providers, caregivers, and hospice staff, especially in the latter years of her life.
