Born in Dong Linh, Vietnam, on January 1, 1947, Toan showed his brave, adventurous spirit early on when he faked his age at just 17 years old to enlist and serve during the Vietnam War. He served as a paratrooper and translator for the South Vietnamese and US Armed Forces, including the 101st Airborne, displaying bravery, leadership, and bridge-building communication.
After making the journey to the United States, Toan initially resided in Iowa before settling in Houston, TX in 1984. A true entrepreneur, Toan built a new life through hard work and determination, successfully owning and operating numerous businesses alongside his beloved wife, Thuan.
In his retirement, Toan carried that same selfless spirit into serving his community. For over 10 years, he faithfully volunteered at St. Clemente’s Monastery, quietly lending a hand with maintenance, landscaping, and anything else the monastery needed.
Throughout his life, Toan was defined by his deep faith, generosity, and constant willingness to help anyone in need. He had a passion for playing golf and loved nothing more than enjoying a drink and sharing a good meal surrounded by family and friends. Known for his playful humor and quick wit, he brought warmth and laughter to every gathering. Above all else, Toan took immense pride in his loved ones, who will forever carry forward his joyful spirit and legacy.
Toan’s family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to all family and friends for their overwhelming love, prayers, and support throughout his battle with kidney cancer. He cherished every single phone call and visit he received during that time.
Toan was preceded in death by his parents, Duc Quang Nguyen and Man Thi Nguyen; his son, Thien Nguyen; and his brothers, Trung Nguyen, Thanh Nguyen, and Thong Nguyen.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Thuan Thi Vu; his children, Tuan Nguyen and his wife Amanda Timm, Tam Nguyen and her husband Robin Chang, and Thy Nguyen and his wife Kathy Nguyen; his cherished grandchildren, Grace, Erin, Claire, Adam, Nolan, Evan, and Beckett; and his sister, Nam Nguyen, along with her family. He also leaves behind extended relatives and dear friends who loved him deeply.
