Nicki Lynn Dooms

Born on July, 1,1977, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to AJ Robertson and Judy Shurley – she was born just three days before, and in the same hospital as her future husband, Ryan Dooms. She grew up attending school in Gregory-Portland, Texas where she met Ryan and made many lifelong friends. In high school, Nicki was a varsity cheerleader and ran track. She was known for her class spirit and her outgoing nature.

After high school, Nicki attended Blinn College before discovering her passion for interior design. She went on to study at the Sheffield School of Interior Design of New York, completing the program in one year.

Afterwards, Nicki moved to Houston to pursue a career in design, eventually founding her own company, NHI Design. Her work evolved from residential design to commercial spaces, including bars and restaurants, often collaborating with her husband, Ryan. She had a true gift for making spaces – and lives—more beautiful.

Life came full circle after reconnecting as old friends, Ryan and Nicki fell in love. They were married on August 29, 2014, in Playa del Carmen, Mexico on the beach. A place she loved to revisit and make new friends, including the local turtles. They had many adventures together and loved each other, their family, friends, and their dogs deeply.

Nicki was beautiful inside and out. She embraced life with joy and laughter. She lit up every room she entered and made instant friends with people from all walks of life. She had a compassionate and considerate nature which drew people to her. She loved travel, food (especially cheese), laughter, fashion, music (especially rap), over-the-top decorating for holidays, and a good time.

A passionate animal lover from childhood, Nicki never met a stray she did not want to save, from her own dogs, to neighborhood raccoons, to the turtles in Playa del Carmen. She happily fed, named, and claimed them as her own. All her beloved dogs were family to her.

Nicki lived fully and loved fiercely. She never stopped planning for the future and faced her illness with fortitude, optimism, and unbreakable spirit. She fought with everything she had and she never gave up.

Nicki is preceded in death by her father, AJ Robertson; her stepfather, Richard Shurley; her grandparents, Teddy Carter and Mable Marie Robertson, Lewis Thomas and Billie Theresa Phillips; her aunt, Charlene Robertson; her uncles, Gene Dusek and Tom Granhold; her father in-law, Lester Dooms, and her beloved dogs, Luke, Bella, and Max.

She is survived by her loving husband of 11 years, Ryan Dooms; her mother, Judy Shurley; her aunt, Patsy Granhold; her cousins, Gina Lux (Doug Neff), Berry Dusek (Donna); her sisters, Belinda Phillips (Bryan), April Skoruppa, Laura Satrum (Aaron), Mary Lozano (Omar); her in-laws: mother in-law, Sandy Dooms Brychta (Ron), brother in-law, Jimmie Dooms (Christin); her nieces and nephews: Attie Lux, Mary Katherine Lux, Jamie Dooms, Brice Dooms, Reed Dooms, Walter Skoruppa, Mark Shurley, and Molly Lozano; and her cherished dogs, Millie and Beaux.

Services will be held Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Heights Funeral Home, 1317 Heights Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77008.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nicki’s memory to Friends for Life Animal Shelter.

The world is dimmer without Nicki’s light—but her love, charisma, laughter, and beautiful spirit will live on in all who knew her.
