He was born on June 14, 1956 in Houston, Texas to O'Banion Jr. and Sonny Williams. Growing up in Houston, he attended Bellaire High School and went on to graduate from Texas Tech University (“Get your guns up.”)
After college, O’Banion attended St. Mary’s School of Law from 1980-1983, where he met his wife, Molly. After graduating law school and getting married, he joined Andrews Kurth (now Hunton Andrews Kurth) in downtown Houston in 1983, where he spent his entire legal career. He became a partner in 1992 and built a distinguished career carving out a niche in the specific intersection of real estate and energy transactions. He retired in March of 2020, after 37 years with the firm, and was not-so-secretly thrilled that COVID prevented the firm from throwing a retirement party in his honor.
O’Banion and his wife were charter members of Christ Presbyterian Church of Houston and have remained steadfast in their involvement. O’Banion served several stints as an elder, most recently with responsibility for Adult Education, which was especially fitting of a man who took seminary classes in his free time.
O’Banion coached each of his five children in multiple sports over the years. We estimate that he coached or assisted coaching at least 30 seasons of baseball, softball, football, and basketball. To those that knew him, one of the greatest joys in his life was coaching little league baseball. He was described as “one of the coaches our boys will remember for all the right reasons.” His coaching legacy is in his calm, steady presence on the field, with an expansive knowledge of the game and his team, garnering respect without ever needing to raise his voice. Most recently, he was delighted to watch his oldest grandson, Harris Kerr, play his first two seasons in Post Oak Little League.
Devoted to his family and unfailingly kind, O’Banion will be remembered as a man of quiet conviction, a lifelong learner, and someone who promoted excellence without drawing attention to himself.
He was preceded in death by his parents, O’Banion Jr. and Sonny Williams. He is survived by his devoted wife Molly Williams and their five dearly loved children: Annie Kerr and her husband Keith Kerr, O'Banion IV, Betsy Moore and her husband Robert Moore, Timothy, and Matthew and his wife Hannah. Six wonderful grandchildren also survive him: Harris and William Kerr; Charlie, Riley and Harper Moore; and Georgia Williams; as well as his two brothers, Paul Williams and Andy Williams.
A Memorial Service will be held in the worship center at Christ Presbyterian Church of Houston, 8300 Katy Freeway, on Friday, October 16, 2026 at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of the usual remembrances, the family requests that donations be made to Christ Presbyterian Church of Houston, Reformed Theological Seminary, or Post Oak Little League.
