Ofelia Ozuna Elizondo, born on January 30, 1931 at the age of 89, passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2020, surrounded by family in her home in Houston, Texas. She was born in Nuevo León, Mexico to Rodrigo Ozuna Reyes and Ursula Cuellar Rios. On June 17, 1950 she married “the love of her life” Baldemar Cabrera Elizondo whom she always called Mi Viejito.
Ofelia and Baldemar worked as migrant workers with their family and lived in many places. Among those were Mexico, New Mexico, Texas, Idaho, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, California, and Colorado before settling in Houston, Texas in 1978. Their days would start by going on long walks in their neighborhood with stops to talk to their neighbors, always ready and wanting to see how they were. They instilled in their children the same behaviors and encouraged their kids to become more than they could ever offer. From the days of working in the fields to owning an own accordion shop in Houston, Ofelia was always by her husband’s side and even helped him with the specialized work in his shop. They were married for nearly 52 wonderful years. Ofelia’s greatest joy's were music and family. She had a big and caring heart and showed it through her love of cooking and feeding anyone who walked through her front door, with her favorite homemade meals to make being flour tortillas and tamales. Until late last year, she was a very active person. Ofelia was always dressed with her hair, makeup, and nails perfected before leaving her home. Even though she only attended elementary school, for years she kept a journal chronicling her days. Ofelia never missed sending a birthday card or calling her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren on their birthdays. Her hobbies included, but were not limited, to sewing, knitting, feeding birds, and tending to her plants. Ofelia had a wonderful sense of humor, which she passed along to every one of her children and grandchildren. She passed away one day prior to Mexican Independence Day.
