

Peggy D. Powers passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 30, 2015, at Memorial City Hospital in Houston, following a brief illness. Born on December 18, 1923 to George and Marjorie Dorrance, Peggy was 91 years old and a lifelong resident of Houston, Texas. She was joined by her loving family during the time of her illness. She will be missed by her family and friends.
Peggy graduated from Lamar High School in Houston in 1941, and then Southern Methodist University with a BA in June, 1945. Peggy’s passion was real estate. She was a career real estate broker/agent, working for Robin Elverson Realtors and Martha Turner/Sotheby’s International Realty for over 50 years, finally retiring when she was 90 years old. In 2013, Peggy was awarded “Realtor Emeritus” status by the National Association of Realtors.
Peggy is survived by her three children; Sharon Harris (Brian) of Houston, Benjamin Powers (Denise) of San Antonio, Kathleen Fannin (Randy) of Houston, four grandchildren; Vincent Powers (Cary), Barrett Powers, Christina Fannin Welch (Christopher), Lee Fannin (Susan), and two great-grandchildren; Carter and Cameron Welch. Peggy is also survived by her brother, George Dorrance and wife Margie of Houston, and her sister, Mary Francis Monteith of Houston, as well as numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund R. Powers, of 22 years, and by Edgar Monteith, her brother-in-law.
Peggy was a member of St Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston. She was a member of the Junior League of Houston and the Late Bloomers Garden Club. She loved to play bingo, poker and bridge. She also loved a party and so looked forward to enjoying a glass of wine in the evening.
During the last year of her life, Peggy was a resident of The Forum at Memorial Woods in Houston. The entire family is thankful for the wonderful accommodations and services provided at The Forum during that time. Peggy renewed some prior acquaintances and made a number of new friends while living there.
Peggy’s family also wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital for their wonderful care of Peggy during her final days.
A memorial service to celebrate Peggy’s life and career is scheduled for Thursday, October 22, from 3-5 pm at The Forum at Memorial Woods, 777 N. Post Oak Rd, Houston, Texas 77024. The Reverend Dr. Michael L. "Mike" Fry from Grace Presbyterian Church will officiate.
