Quentin Dee "Boss" Barrington passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2013, in Houston, Texas. Quentin was born April 29,1920 in West, Texas, the youngest child of Sam William Bairrington and Mary Etta Benson. His mother died when he was a toddler. His grandmother, who before the Civil War as a pre-teen had walked from Pennsylvania to Texas, moved in to help with the children until her death. Shortly thereafter, upon Sam's remarriage, Quentin acquired a step-mother and step-brother along with two younger siblings in the ensuing years.
During the Great Depression, Quentin, along with many of the young men in the Waco area, enlisted in the Texas National Guard 143rd Infantry, 36th Division unit also known as the "T-Patchers". The 143rd was comprised largely of farmers' sons for $1 per drill, two drills a month, the basic pay. When the United States entered WWII, the 36th Division was mobilized and sent to Cape Cod to prepare for German winters, only to find themselves on a boat bound for North Africa on April 1, 1943. Quentin was a part of the Italian Campaign of Autumn 1943, Anzio, Salerno, and the Rapido River along with the taking of Rome on June 5,1944; the invasion of southern France, and the Battle of the Bulge. During the 36th's drive into Bavaria, his division overran some of the sub-camps of the Dauchau concentration camp, liberating prisoners on April 30,1945. He was honorably discharged from the Army as a Sergeant having been awarded the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, and various other service and campaign medals.
Returning from WWII, Quentin moved to Houston, Texas, where he married Marjorie Mozelle Pollard on January 24,1949, and raised two daughters. He was a caring and loving father and husband who believed in working hard to provide for his family. In 1982, he retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a Special Equipment Installer with 38 years of service, having installed equipment in most of Houston's downtown skyscrapers. He is preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Viola Jo Bairrington, siblings, Harold Spencer Barrington, Clara Vivian Wallace, William "Bill" O'Bannon, and Vera Jo Englet. Quentin is survived by his loving wife Mozelle, two daughters Susan Barrington Sanchez and husband Pablo Sanchez and Vicki Jo Barrington and Dr. Larry L. Patchell, all of Houston. He is also survived by his brother Reuben Allen "Buddy" Barrington and wife Dolores of Rio Vista, Texas, brother-in-law David C. Englet of Houston and numerous nieces and nephews. Quentin was an avid deer hunter but in recent years, viewed his hunts through the Sportsman Channel. He looked forward to watching the Tour de France every July and enjoyed Astros Baseball. He was a member of Woodland Lodge No. 1157 as a 32nd degree Mason for 60 years and a member of The American Legion Post No. 560-Garden Oaks and the 36th Division Association. He also leaves behind dear friend Robert "Bob" Johnson of Kingsland, Texas, a lifelong friend and T-Patcher. He thoroughly enjoyed his annual trips to Waco rekindling friendships with his fellow T-Patchers.
