Born in Houston, Texas, on September 18, 1970, to Raymond Vernon Renteria Sr. and Ida Mena Renteria, Raymond, affectionately known as “Boy” by his loved ones, graduated from South Houston High School in 1989. He was proud to be from South Houston and often declared he was from “Taco Town,” even when we reminded him he was really from Edgebrook.
Raymond was a man whose heart was as expansive as his smile. Known for his big bear hugs and uplifting spirit, he embraced everyone with warmth, encouragement, and unwavering love. His presence lit up every room, and his legacy is one of kindness, compassion, and deep faith.
He was preceded in death by his beloved father, Raymond Vernon Renteria Sr., whose memory he held close to his heart.
Raymond was also preceded in death by his grandparents: Raymond V. Renteria, Angela Renteria, Lupe Mena Cantera, and Francisco Mena; his uncles: Ray Renteria, Rudy Renteria, Frank Mena Jr., and Edward “Pinky” Mena; and his aunt Helen Acosta. Each of them played a meaningful role in his life, and their legacies live on in the love he gave and the stories he shared.
Raymond is survived by his devoted mother, Ida Mena Renteria, and his loving sisters: Rhonda Renteria, Margot De La Paz, Valerie Renteria, and Roxanne Renteria, along with her husband Zal, each of whom shared a deep and enduring bond with him.
He also leaves behind his chosen children: Olivia Mendez, Jose Mendez, Michael Anthony Mendez, and Mariah Mendez, whom he loved as his own.
Raymond was a proud and playful Tio to Jalissa Garza, Destiny Renteria, Hollie Chavez, Angel Chavez, and Raymond Vernon Renteria III, a cherished tio, great-tio, and a loving grandpa. Each child and grandchild held a special place in his heart.
He is also survived by his grandfather Jesse Cantera, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, whose lives were brightened by his generous spirit, magnetic presence, and unwavering faith. Their shared memories and deep family ties are a testament to the love that surrounded Raymond throughout his life.
To know Raymond was to know a man who loved fiercely and gave freely. His generosity touched countless lives, and his faith in Christ was the foundation of his being. Whether sharing laughter at family gatherings, playfully teasing his sisters and nieces, or offering quiet words of encouragement, Raymond’s presence was a gift to all who knew him.
His life was a testament to love, love for God, love for family, and love for humanity. Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that Raymond is now at peace, embraced by the eternal love of Christ that he held so dear.
Rest in Paradise, Boy. Our faith assures us that this goodbye is not forever, we will be reunited again. We thank God for the blessing of your life as a son, brother, tio, nephew, cousin, bonus dad, grandpa, and friend. You filled our lives with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
You will live in our hearts always and forever. WE LOVE YOU.
In God’s presence, every tear is wiped away. No more death, no more mourning—only peace, healing, and eternal joy. Revelation 21:4
