Rebecca Jeane Pope (Becky) died on Sunday March 24, 2013. Born in Midland, TX on December 20, 1956, she was a resident of Houston most of her life. Becky graduated from Baylor University in 1979 with a Bachelors degree in Social Work from Baylor and she received her Masters of Social Work degree from the University of Houston.
Becky helped many with her love and caring through her work at a variety of organizations including Palmer Drug Center, the Montrose Counseling Center, Harris County Probation Office and the US Probation Office working her way to Deputy Chief.
She is survived by her wife of 20 years Pamela J. Hilmes. Becky and Pam shared their home with 2 miniature Australian shepherds (Taz and Sky) and 4 cats (Bo, Jangles, Felix, Ozzie). Like Pam, Becky loved bicycling - at one point their household sported 5 bicycles each and 2 tandems for everything from road races, mountain biking, and bike trail pleasure! In similar fashion, their love of the outdoors and hiking took Becky and Pam from local, state, and federal parks to ascending Mt. Kilimanjaro in September 2011 to raise awareness for Ovarian Cancer.
Becky battled ovarian cancer since October 2008 and along the way did much to raise awareness and inspire many people - from wearing costumes and handing out goodie bags at chemo to fundraising efforts with Sprint for Life, MD Anderson’s ovarian cancer research program for collecting much needed money for research.
Becky lived her life full of passion, joy, laughter, song, adventure, loyalty, respect, love, and yes on occasion a practical joke and a little irreverence. She was a person of unending faith and worshiped as a member at Cathedral of Hope Houston UCC.
Becky is survived by her father William B. Pope; sisters Elizabeth Anne (Betty Anne) Wicker and husband, Dr. R. Dale, and Valerie Lynn Kennedy and husband, Gary; Nieces, Shelby and Kendall; Nephews, Michael, Matthew, Marshall, and Nathan. She is preceded in death by her mother Mary Margaret.
A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday March 27 at 6pm in the Chapel of Heights Funeral Home followed by a reception held there. Memorial donations may be made to Sprint for Life – MD Anderson’s Ovarian Cancer Research program in memory of Becky Pope.
