Richard was born to Halley Scheer and Martha Scheer (formerly Wolfe) on June 2, 1945, in Houston, Texas. Known as Pinky to his friends and family, Richard grew up in Houston as an avid Houston Buffaloes, Colt .45s and later Houston Astros fan. Richard graduated from Charles H. Milby High School in 1963 where he participated in Junior ROTC and excelled in leadership. Richard continued his education at the University of Houston, earning a bachelor’s degree in history and a commission in the United States Army in 1968. Richard served his country from 1968 to 1975, spending time in Vietnam in 1970-1971. During his last years of service, Richard was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas where he met and married Elfriede Tresbach. Upon his honorable discharge, Richard attended the Baylor School of Law earning his Juris Doctorate in 1978. His law career began with a clerkship in Tyler, Texas and later practicing law in Fort Worth. In 1984, Richard relocated to Beaumont, Texas and began working for Strong, Pipkin, Nelson & Bissell. Richard became a partner in Strong, Pipkin, Bissell and Ledyard in 1988 where he remained until retirement in 1998.
While Richard had great professional success, he was most proud of the life he built with Elfriede and their children. As an avid reader, Richard read several books at one time. He traveled all over the US enjoying both national parks and historical sites with his family. At home, Richard enjoyed classic movies, Laurel & Hardy, and the music of bygone eras. Richard became a widower in 2002, but life’s beautiful journey opened his heart to Dr. Mary Kelley in 2006. Richard and Mary were introduced by a mutual friend and began a sweet courtship which led to marriage in May 2009. Richard and Mary continued to travel, including trips to Europe, River Cruises and taking their Corvette along Route 66. Richard and Mary settled in New Braunfels, Texas and enjoyed their time together with their family and pets.
