My brother Walter and I had Fr. Rivers as a counselor at Camp Foley for several summers. He was a great guy to all of us at the Camp. I also saw him playing in the Notre Dame Band during football season. He would always wave to us in the stands. John Henebry Rancho Mirage California

You were a part of my life since mine and my siblings First Communion at Blessed Sacrament, and stayed in our lives. I kept you tucked away like the special person, friend, gem that you are,and came to you not long ago for your loving guidance and friendship. I remember asking you to instruct me from your heart like only Jesus would do because I had no one else to. And that you did. I called you again for more of your guidance only to find you left me. Time ran away for a while and I had not spoken to you and I lost the best friend and man I know who could help heal a soul in only the way our Lord and Saviour could. Your passing just made this journey of mine a bit more difficult but I will be OK because like Jesus, I had you for a while on the journey with me. May God grant you eternal rest and peace Father. You were loved by so many.

Back in the early seventies a friend of mine invited me to a CYO meeting at Holy Name. Father Patout walked into the meeting and my friend introduced us. I will never forget how he made me feel so welcome. Father Patout was such a kind, wonderful, human being. May he rest in peace.

I will miss Father Patout dearly. He was my guide, my councelor, my friend. He was always there for his parish. My girls made their scarments with Father Patout at the altar. He was unselfish and gave his life to serving others. We love you, Father Patout. May God give comfort to your family and the rest of us who miss you.

I remember Fr. Patout as a little girl at All Saints and how he married my parents as they renewed their vows and how nice he was. Years later I was blessed again to have found Fr. Patout at the Port of Houston and asked him if he would marry my husband and me and Fr. Patout came back to All Saints to marry us over 21 years ago. Fr. Patout had such a wonderful sense of humor, a beautiful smile and very warm hearted. He will always be remembered. God bless you.

Fr. Patout went to ND with my dad and we've been blessed to have him as our family Priest my whole life. He baptized me, gave me my First Communion and I was an Altar Boy for him in grade school at St. Theresa. I remember being nervous before my First Confession with him, devastated when he was the Celebrant at my dad's funeral, and elated when he married my wife & I. He also baptized both of my kids, and was scheduled to give First Communion to my daughter. We are thankful for the jolly memories of Rivers at so many significant moments in our lives, typically with Pat at his side. The Broussard family will miss our Priest & friend. Rest in peace Padre.

Father Rivers Patout was an extraordinary and unique man. He married us in 1985. Personally I was raised Baptist and Larry as Catholic and I was nervous about a Catholic wedding. We took the enlightening pre marital program with Father Patout. Though quite an education, his sense of humor put me at great ease. Our condolences to the family and all his friends as he will be greatly missed. A true man of God that touched the lives of everyone he met.

Pat Nemec, Seamen's Center was wonderfully run by Rivers, so sorry to lose him at such a young age.
The annual carnival was a fun time not only to make funds but for our two sons to get involved with the (case of beer) Wheel of Fortune. Their Dad Melvin loved working along side them.
Melvin has Alzheimer's now but we have fun memories of those years.
Hope you do to and are well.

My sympathy and condolences to Fr. Rivers family and friends. He has been such a gift to our community both locally and globally in his ministries to his parishes, Ecumenical work, and seafarers. I've know Fr. Rivers in both business, St. Pius, and his early Eucumenical insterests for many years, and I like so many others will miss him. God bless.

God be with all of us as we grieve the death of such a good man. Rivers and I were on the debate team at Navasota High School and became best friends from then on. He helped bring me out of my shyness to become an international speaker. My wife, Kathy, and I are still traveling and speaking together and on occasion would do things with Rivers and his friend, Pat. My father was a pastor at White Hall and Rivers would visit often during our High School days, bringing his neat sense of humor to our family. Many of my brothers and sisters remember him with fondness and have written to me about their memories. The Patouts always treated me as part of their family and I stayed with them one summer after my family moved to Missouri. I am a Lutheran Pastor and we always enjoyed talking theology together. I will miss his powerful presence, but hold on to the many ways he affected my life.

Although we weren't officially related, Rivers once said we were "cousins a la Louisiana," as he knew so many of our Derbes relatives. As a young reporter on the Houston Chronicle, I was thrilled beyond words the day he called and asked if I'd like to do some interviews on the first Russian ship to dock in the United States . . .ever. With his pull and advice, I got to do many great interviews down on the docks. Rivers was such a good man, love it that Nick De La Tore described him as "feisty" in the Chronicle article. Bet no one disagrees with that! Brenda Beust Smith

My condolences and prayers go out to Father Rivers Patout's family and friends. I was lucky enough to be baptized and blessed by Father Patout so long ago. Believe me I have a blessed life and I'd like to think he had a hand in that. So rest in peace Father and know of all the wonders you gave life to with all your years of dedicated service to all of us in Houston and its surrounding areas will live on in us.

"Pat" as he was called as a child, touched many lives -even before he became a priest. He was always a giving presence among us. He came to Navasota perform the marriage ceremony. My husband's Catholic church would not do it because I was not becoming a Catholic. I have always been grateful for his act of kindness.

Father Patout married us almost 42 years ago and our marriage has lasted all this time. He came to our home to bless it, have dinner and watch the 1972 Olympics on our big screen 13" color television. Our home has lasted all this time but we forgot to ask him to bless the TV. He leaves everyone he touched with pleasant memories that will last a lifetime. Heaven is truly blessed to be receiving such a wonderful person.

Father Patout was such a sweet person, always a jolly laugh and had lots of hugs. I met him at Holy Nsme and he sponsored our Young Adults Group-he was always fun, laughing and kind. He married me and several of my siblings as well as baptisms. He always made non-catholics feel at ease by inviting them to communion at mass. He made you laugh and he made you smile. You were truly a great priest. You are in heaven singing with the angels.

Father Patout was a true representative of living the life of Christ on Earth.
He was always there for anyone and everyone. He was dedicated to God and served his fellow man with love, kindness, patience and always, always, a commitment to the word of God.
He was there for my brother and guided him to the University of Notre Dame, and later officiated at his wedding. He was there for family baptisms. He was there to help us see our parents go to Heaven and uplift our spirits.
Here, you will be greatly missed Fr. Patout. But in heaven, there are so many waiting to see you and hug you, and I know God has his arms open wide and Jesus is smiling.

Fr. Patout was a wonderful priest and very kind. He will be truly missed. He was at Holy Name Church in Houston when I was a child. He always made little children feel special. One day not too long after my first communion when I was 7 years old, I wore a little doggy pendant i got for my birthday and I was so proud of it. He knew it. I still remember how he blessed my forehead and then touch the pendant and said AND "God Bless your little doggy too." I always think of this memory fondly when I think of Fr. Patout. What was special to you was special to him. A truly great person. Nothing but wonderful memories. Rest in Peace Father. Enjoy your eternal reward. We love you!! The GOINS Family of Holy Name.

First met Rivers when he was in diapers, and he never changed. Always a smile and a positive attitude. Over the years he administered many sacraments to our family, and we are so thankful. Had the privilege of touring Europe with Rivers after his graduation from ND, and I can assure you he was the bond that held the tour group together. Our best to the entire Patout family, and may his soul rest in Peace.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Patout Family. I had the privilege of working with Father Patout for 3 years while assigned to marine safety oversight on the Houston Ship Channel from 2008-2011. Father Patout was a staunch advocate for Seafarer Rights and worked hard to improve shore access for seafarers visiting the Port of Houston. He was a great man and his compassion and love for seafarers will not be forgotten! Eternal Rest Father Patout!

Rivers Patout's family; Elizabeth, Mary Fanette, Jared, & Frank: Frank had a visit with me on the telephone and we reminesed about your parents, each of you, (my brother, Bill, in Navasota tried to help me locate), but I finally reached Frank through his Houston home telephone number. My wife, Carol, and I and many in our St. Philip Presbyterian Church in Houston visited Pat at the Seamen's Center at the Ship Channel at least once a year. In fact his death was in the Presbytery bulletin (New Covenant Presbyterian organization that serves Southeast Texas including Navasota, Houston, etc) and our good friends at church, Dick and Sue Howard, first contacted me about Pat's death. The Howards have organized our churche's provision of seamen's boxes each year in the fellowship hall of our church and then to the Seamen's Center, and they frequently delivered them to the Seamen's Center where we regularly visit and often visited with Pat over the years. At Christmas we visit the Seamen's Center and ride up and down the ship channel in the Port of Houston's ship and sing carols to the men on the ships. We will all miss Pat as you will and remember what he provided to seamen around the world. With warm regards to each of you,
Luke Lucas.

We were very fortunate to have him as our leader. I will miss him dearly and, yes, he is irreplaceable. I thank him for all the blessings he gave to me and my family. No one climbed more gangways or ministered to more homesick sailors at the Port of Houston than Father Patout-he was truly a man of service. I recall a meeting where he said-"Houston is the most progressive, efficient and compassionate port in the world". This statement is true in large part due to the faithful, enthusiastic and cheerful work of Father Patout in the name of Christ.

Our hearts are saddened with the loss of Father Patout. We saw him last at First Reconciliation for our kids at St. Christopher's. He was always present to celebrate the Sacraments of our children, to marry my husband and I, the quinceanera of our daugher, the funeral of my father, and to provide many many many fond memories that we can carry with us. You will be missed Father. The tremendous work you did here on earth is done. Save a place for us Padrecito. Besitos from here to Heaven

Father Patout I will miss you, your happy spirit, kindness, compassion, guidance and trust. Thank you for being there for me from my junior high school days to the day you went to your Eternal Home to be with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. You are the one that kept me from falling into darkness during the past year and a half, and if not for your taking the time to be there to listen to me and remind me that regardless of what people say or do that might discourage or hurt me, God has a plan for me and to be patient, as HE does not give us more than we can bear. My heart has another break in it because you have left us, but I will take what you have taught me and pass it forward every chance I get - to those I meet. To your family - my deepest sympathy and you are in my prayers that your hearts will be filled with comfort during this difficult time. Father Patout - you will be deeply missed, but greatly remembered.

My wife and I will miss Fr. Patout, especially on Houston Marathon Sunday in January. Fr. Patout did the pre-marathon mass for the 14 straight years that I've run the marathon. He helped prepare many for the tough endeavor with last minute spiritual aid. Rest in Peace.

To the Patouts: Terrie and I express our condolences and give prayers to all. With just a limited experience of knowing Father Rivers, I was very impressed with his Christ-like love for his fellow human pilgrims on earth. He can now see the face of God and be rewarded.

Fr. Patout was a long-time family friend. My mother, Lucille, was his nanny when they were young in Anderson, TX. He was the celebrant at my sister's wedding in 1971, mine in 1982, my parent's 35th wedding anniversary in 1986, and he did my mother's funeral last year. He was always there for us - visiting my mother whenever she needed him. He touched all those he came in contact with with his humor and love. The world is a little less bright with his absence, and I will miss him dearly.

Frank, Carolene, Ari, Billy and Gab,
Our hearts and prayers go out to all of you. We were all so blessed to have known "Rivers", he was not only humorous, but such an interesting person with so many stories to tell. Crawfish Boils will not be the same without him. I know he completed his mission and at this moment God and Rivers are sitting face to face and God is welcoming Rivers home with a pat on the back for a job well done. God's Blessing of Peace and Comfort to you all. Maureen, Lance, Randy and Brady
