Robert Paul Mitchke proudly served his country for 32 years in the United States Navy, beginning his military career as an enlisted sailor in 1963 and rising through the ranks to retire as a Captain in 1995. A decorated Surface Warfare Officer, Bob served aboard multiple naval vessels and held assignments around the world. He earned a Master of Science in Oceanography from the Naval Postgraduate School. Following his graduate studies, Bob served as an instructor at the Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center in San Diego, where he helped prepare fellow sailors for the complex challenges of naval warfare. During Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, he served in Saudi Arabia and as Commanding Officer of the Military Sealift Command Office in Houston, Texas. His distinguished career reflected his dedication to leadership, service, and country. Bob took immense pride in his Navy service, and that pride remained with him throughout his life.
Outside of his distinguished Navy career, Bob was a man of determination, independence, and more than a little stubbornness. He loved fixing things himself and rarely saw a reason to call someone else when he believed he could figure it out on his own. While the finished product wasn't always the prettiest, it was always done his way. That stubborn spirit, resourcefulness, and determination were part of what made Bob who he was, and those who loved him wouldn't have had him any other way.
Bob had a love for plants and gardening, taking special pride in growing his own tomatoes and peppers. He also enjoyed experimenting in the kitchen, creating his own unique barbecue sauces. Some of his creations were absolutely delicious, while others were, well, a little more memorable than tasty! But that was Bob - always willing to try something new, put his own spin on it, and proudly share the results with those he loved.
Beyond his accomplishments, Bob's greatest legacy was the love and loyalty he showed his family. He believed that family was built not only through blood, but through the bonds we choose to honor and the people we continue to show up for. He was a man who stood by those he loved, even through life's most difficult chapters. His steady presence, quiet strength, and unwavering commitment to family will be remembered and cherished by those fortunate enough to call him Dad, Papa, and friend.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and his loving wife Christine Smith Mitchke. Left to cherish his memory are his children Therese Pallares and husband Frank, Leana Bell and husband Brian, Robert Mitchke and wife Jenny, and Amanda Kreitz; brother John Vines; and grandchildren Dina Segovia, Alexander Segovia, Jacob Suter, and Gracie Bell.
A special place in Bob’s heart was held by his beloved granddaughter and caregiver, Dina Segovia, whose unwavering love, devotion, and compassionate care brought him comfort during his final years. Her dedication to him was a beautiful reflection of the bond they shared.
