Rose O'Donnell Licce, aged 81, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2024, in Houston, Texas. Born Rosaleen O'Donnell on January 28, 1943, in Houston, Texas, to Irish immigrants John Joseph "J.J." and Elizabeth "Lily" O'Donnell, Rose was a cherished mother, wife, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend who lived a life filled with love, laughter, and compassion.
Rose's journey began in Pasadena, TX, where she graduated from South Houston High School in 1962. Rose’s beauty and grace turned heads, though she always preferred family over the spotlight. In 1963, she married Blase Licce, the love of her life, and together they raised three children: Blase, Chris, and Kathie.
As a mother, Rose was the perfect blend of warmth and cool, extending her nurturing spirit beyond her own children to become a second mother to all of her kids' friends. She offered love and guidance to countless others who were fortunate enough to be welcomed into her home. Although Rose and Blase later divorced, they remained close friends. Blase was always a welcome presence at the large gatherings of the extended Irish-American family, where Rose's talent for bringing people together shone brightest. These gatherings were often punctuated by the aroma of her famous green beans and the sound of laughter echoing through the house.
Rose's career in real estate at Apartment World Locators was marked by her integrity, dedication to clients, and uncanny ability to find the perfect home for anyone. Her professional success was matched only by her warmth and generosity.
Known for her quick wit and sharp humor, Rose had a knack for delivering memorable one-liners that, while not always suitable for print, never failed to bring surprised laughter to those around her. She embodied the Irish spirit of "céad míle fáilte" - a hundred thousand welcomes - making everyone feel loved and welcomed in her presence.
Rose's love for animals was boundless. Her home was always shared with a faithful four-legged companion. Her beloved companions over the years included Gia, Cash, Micky Bird, Raggles, and more.
Her heart was always open, offering care and comfort to those in need, especially her family. Rose spent a decade caring for her father after his stroke, followed by tending to her mother in her old age. Later in life, she lovingly cared for her granddaughter, Railey, showcasing her enduring commitment to family.
Rose found joy in life's simple pleasures: BLT sandwiches, Mexican food, Elvis, movies, magazines, and TV stars. Her zest for life was infectious, and she had a unique ability to make the ordinary feel extraordinary.
Rose is survived by her sons, Blase Licce and Christopher Licce; her daughter, Kathie Licce Back, and son-in-law, Ron Back; her grandchildren, Railey Back and Ethan Back; and her great-granddaughter, Delilah Rose Robinson. She is also lovingly remembered by her sisters, Arlene Baranda and Betty Sprouse, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Rose was predeceased by her parents; her former husband, Blase Licce; her sister, Maureen Sweeney; her brothers, Jim O'Donnell and Jack O'Donnell; her brothers-in-law, George Baranda, Richard Sprouse, and Pat Sweeney; and her sister-in-law, Betty Jean O'Donnell.
A graveside burial will be held on September 27, 2024, at 1 PM at Forest Park Lawndale. In true Rose fashion, the family encourages attendees to come prepared with their favorite "Rose story" to share.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Caydance Assisted Living and Memory Care, and Bayou City Hospice for their loving and compassionate care of Rose in her final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to BARC Animal Shelter in Rose's memory, honoring her lifelong love for animals.
Rose's warmth, kindness, and indomitable spirit will be deeply missed, but her legacy of love, laughter, and compassion will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She taught us to appreciate the beauty in everyday life, to love fiercely, and to always be ready with a witty remark and a welcoming smile.
